CV boot found Leaking. Replace Driveshaft too?
I have a 93 Civic EX with about 195K miles. I finally got around to replacing my front brakes and while I was taking the rotor off I noticed a large amount of grease on the brake shield. Looking around I see that my CV boot has ruptured spewing grease on the wheel well. There's still a little of grease left on the inside. One of my buddies said it's still ok to drive, but I'm worried. A few indy shops quoted me aorund $200 to do both dr/pass CV boots, but I also read that if dirt has gotten in (most likely) I need a new rebuilt driveshaft. Is that true? And Also if I continue to drive on it what can happen? Thanks in advance.

Replace it. Just go get rebuilt ones from like advanced auto parts. Could you do the work yourself? If so you can save alot of money. it came out to less than 100 like 70ish for both sides and i turned in the old ones as cores.

Yea, I always heard and do just replace the whole axle. It isn't that much work to do, and there is even a how to on how to do it.

just replace the whole axle. replacing an axle is a lot easier then replacing an cv boot imo.

Yes, If it is torn it is best to replace the entire axle as dirt and sand might have gotten in there and damaged the internal components. Also make sure to check the condition of your other side's boot. If one tore it usually means the other one is probably close to ripping open also.

I've never had to replace the axles on any of my cars, even ones with over 200,000 miles. I've cleaned them out (brake clean, or a parts sink if you have one), squeezed some new grease into them (costs a couple bucks for a packet of CV joint grease at an auto parts store), and put new band clamps on them ($1 each at an auto parts store). New boots will depend on the manufacturer, I've never had to replace them on my Honda, but have done them on Fords, Chevys, and a Porsche, they are not that expensive. I've never had any kind of problem cleaning and lubricating CV joints.

Yea comepared to having to take the axle apart, clean out the grease, regreese it, put the axle back together, grease it, put the boot on, find that special CV joint band tool for the boot and getting it all back together... Its just easier to do the whole axle.

The banding tool costs less than $10 and can be found about anywhere:

If the boots are blown wide open and there is a lot of grit in them, replace the joints/axles. If there's no dirt, replacing the boot is much cheaper.
