is it the cv boot?

recently a sqeaking noise started coming from my rear left tire. it starts when i start driving and if i tap on the breaks it will go away. im not sure what it is. i talked to a friend and he said it was my cv boot and i could change it myself. someone else told me id need to get a whole new axle. i dont want to take it to a shop if i can fix this problem by myself. can anyone pin point what the problem is?

You only have CVs in the front of the car. Don't listen to your friend, he obviously knows nothing.

Does the noise happen when you hit the brakes?

Does the noise go away completely after you tap the brakes? (for the rest of the time that your driving)

not your cv boot if in the rear... unless you're driving a 4wd civic...

it might be your brake pads sticking or something...

pretty sure the si's have rear disc brakes

EDIT: haha... i got confused w/ another post... anyway, rear discs will look like the front brakes with a metal disc (rotor) and a brake caliper on one side... drums just look like a black metal bowl behind your wheels (looks different from the front)

i would look into getting your rear brakes checked. it COULD be a bad wheel bearing, but i doubt it

Re: is it the cv boot? (pgpunkguy)

ok thanks. do i need to take it to a shop then? or is it easy enough to have checked by myself or my stepdad?

oh and is it bad to be driving my car around until its fixed?

Re: is it the cv boot? (jaealdana)

it's something that can be done at home if you know what ur doing. maybe your step-dad is competant enough...

if you have rear drums (which is usually the case), sometimes they're a pain to crack open to see of the brake shoes are doing ok...
