custom Icebox intake
I was running a Cold air intake but I got tired of watching for puddles and the filter getting dirty, so I cut a section of my 3" intake piping to fit between the throttle body and the factory airbox. I then ran some aluminum ducting from the bottom of the airbox to the front bumper opening. I ordered a k&n drop in filter and it should be arriving in 2 days. Do you think my gains will be similar to the Comptech Icebox?

Re: custom Icebox intake (SiKSiR)
The stock Air box over any tube style intake is always the way to go. People are so obsessed with cosmetics and name-brands that they don't even realize that they are not making anything more than noise. Take out the lower res box and use a drop in filter, the extention isn't bad either, although i don't know that it helps that much, but it has no detrimental effects that I can see.

Im running the comptech icebox and i love it. going from the stock airbox i can feel some minimal gains in the low rpms where before the car seem to bog. it is also significantly quiet over the AEM CAI.

My AEM CAI makes 10whp more than my stock 99 Si air box with HKS Foam filter and cold air tubing to the bottom of the bumper. The stock box is not designed well for cam'd motors. There was a decent loss everywhere, especially above VTEC. I do have Jun3 package, stock motor with bolt-ons might have different results.

Re: custom Icebox intake (Cheap Bastard)
Yeah, but I also replaced the factory airtube with a mandrel bent intake pipe so that should free up a little bit more horsepower. Plus with the Jun3 cams you're moving alot of air. I doubt I'm moving that much air with just a DC 4-1 header and a muffler.

Re: custom Icebox intake (SiKSiR)
did you lose a lot of torque with the 4-1 header???? Is it 2.25 or 2.5"???? I just put on my 4-1 2.5" headers and I lost so much torque that I barely screech the tires in 2nd gear. In fact they don't even screech, just kind of spin... Well???

I did that too. I removed the stock arm and secondary chamber and replaced it with a Matrix 3" short ram tube. I don't have dyno's but I think it felt worse/slower than the stock arm and secondary box. I don't know exactly why it's worse, but I think the secondary chamber help flow, especially during the VTEC switch.
