speedo works fine. just checked the button on the clutch pedal and my pedal is touching it, the button is actually pressed in roughly 1/8" give or take a little when the clutch is resting.
i actually pulled the main cruise switch per the repair manual and broke out the ohm meter. i dont have continuity between certain pins when i should. this is the first item to look at according to my honda manual. the switch is only $36 from majestic honda. i think i may try to borrow my friends switch to be 100% sure before ordering

they are separate. the clutch sensor is for when the clutch is up and not pressed in, the brake is the opposite and turns it off when it is depressed.

Edit: I bet you meant the switch on the dash with the indicator light beneath it. The following refers to the switch on the steering wheel. It seems like the problem is always either at one of the four switches (for manual tranny): Brake, clutch, steering wheel, dash. All these have springs and electrical contacts that wear with time and so are vulnerable with extended use. The wiring and other parts (actuator under the hood, CC module, cable reel assembly) seem to hold up fine.

There are at least two tiny ball bearings and two tiny springs in the switch on the steering wheel. If someone was monkeying with it before you, these parts are easy to lose. Junkyards have plenty of these switches [both the one on the steering wheel and the one on the dash] and they tend to be in good working condition. You can always do a continuity check of the switch at the yard, besides.

There are adjusting procedures for the brake and clutch cruise control switches. See http://honda.lioness.googlepages.com/cruisecontrol

Just to make sure, you checked the right clutch pedal switch, right? There's two.

Problem solved!

while i was adjusting the free play on my clutch via the cruise control button/stopper, i noticed the button wasn't going in all the way when the pedal was resting. i screwed it in so the button is fully pressed in when the pedal is resting and now my cruise works again! thank you all for the suggestions early on. sorry it took me a little while to post back but i have been busy with my brake system and some other components and couldn't drive the car for a week

want to join this discussion with a further question

95 civic ex, 2dr
170,000mi
automatic transmission

cruise control worked fine until last week
i pressed the button on the dash and the light didn't turn on
hit it a couple of times (on/off) and it finally came on

was on the road thursday, engaged normally
but hitting the brake did not disengage
hit button on dash, light went out, but did not disengage (freaked out)
had to brake and drop 20mph before it disengaged
figured it had just freaked out, hoped it would work fine after turning the car off/on again

was on the road sunday, engaged normally
braking and pressing the button would disengage normally
was cruising and my foot accidentally hit the gas (slightly) and it disengaged
it never used to do that before, it would just increase speed and when i took my foot off the gas, it would slow back to the cruise speed.

is it safe to use?
how do i diagnose the problem?
(sorry, i do not have a lot of car maintenance experience)

thanks,

^^^ @freonchill:

I'm sorry, but it really sounds like your cruise control computer "brain" - it sits next to your left foot under your dash - is on the fritz. First I would test if the unit is grounded properly (it probably is, but this is a common source of vehicle electrical problems), then I would try finding a replacement at the auto wreckers - might be $10-25.

any advice for checking for its proper grounding?
(e.g. is there a ground wire from it that is screwed into the chassis/frame somewhere; wire color coating; etc)

thanks,

Yes .... but be warned: it is SUCH a pain to get to, and the workspace is so cramped, that you might be better off just trying out the new cruise brain first, instead. BUT... since that would be jumping ahead in the diagnosis -- here is what I would do:

  1. Pop the hood and remove the negative battery terminal.
  2. Get your flashlight and crawl into the wheel well. Pull back the carpet in the back corner.
  3. Remove the connector from the Cruise Brain - it's a 14-pin connector and plugs in on the back side.
  4. Get out your multimeter and test for continuity (set it to Ohms, and if there is continuity, it should read near zero). To do this, insert one test lead into the connector where the BLK wire is pinned, and touch the other to a bolt that's screwed in to the body. There is one at the base of the bracket on which the cruise brain is bolted, that should work.

Again, I highly doubt that this is the problem, given the volume of different problems you're having (ie., not the same recurrant problem, so it is most likely the cruise brain itself), but it is the correct procedure to start out with. Post back here with your results.

I figured I'd join in by saying thanks.. My cruise didnt work on my lil Del Sol, had no clue. I replaced the box that has the cruise cable and it still didnt work.

Researched, found this thread, checked what the OP found on his car that wasnt working and found that on MY car, the little stopper thingy on the clutch pedal was gone, so nothing was pressing against the actual button for the cruise control.

I drove down the road, pressed it with my finger and the cruise light came on.

Awesome!

**edit**

**Edit** it's # 30 in the diagram, Stopper, Clutch Pedal - $4.95

i was going to check the buttons on the steering wheel. anyone wanna chime in??
My problem ended up being the clutch switch. To verify this I unplugged the switched and jump the wires. Took the car for a test drive and the cc worked as advertised. I have a new switch on order now.

Thanks a million! Mine wasn't working, put in a roundhead bolt and nut. Test drove the car and the cruise control now works! Thanks again.....

Did all this. Line for line.
No power to grey wire. (Brake light switch)
Replaced with a pull a part switch today.

End result. Brake light switch was the culprit.

Pin all this. Even if something fails.
