Default Crappy fuel economy...help!

It's actually on my daily driver, a stock 1999 corolla, but we seem to have some knowledable folks in here so...
Just bought the car and the fuel economy is crap...what components could affect it?
Spark plugs are fine
Spark plug wires are fine
Tire pressure is good
Air filter is clean
I can't see/smell any gas leaks

The only other thing I can think of would be a clogged fuel filter...?

Auto or manual? Cap and rotor should be inspected. That, and what you've checked so far would cover the ignition components. Any CEL's? You don't state the mileage on it, but I would think a '99 would be too new to have a lazy O2 sensor. Did you check what the estimated MPG should be for the model you've got? Maybe you're expecting too much?

If the fuel pressure wasn't up to par, I'd expect the engine would be starving, or at least idling strangely. It actually doesn't have a distributor..honestly I'm not sure how the ignition system works. No CELS, every other corolla owner I've talked to says I should be getting 30-32 in city driving (this is with an auto), and I'm in the low 20's.

I don't want to go on any corolla only board...especially if it's "performance" oriented. I'm afraid of what I might find...

It's an auto? Maybe the torque converter lock-up isn't functioning. I doubt that would be the sole cause of such a drastic mileage decrease, though. Just tossing out ideas here.
