Default crankshaft pulley.

Im in the process of removing my head and Im trying to remove the crankshaft pulley so i can remove the lover timeing belt cover to get to the belt tensioner. MY PROBLEM IS: when I try to loosen the crankshaft bolt the crankshaft obviously moves. I wanted to know how to stop the crankshaft from turning. Do I need a special tool for this?

If the del Sol is similar to the 92 Civic, you can remove the access cover to the flywheel and wedge a chisel or similar hardened steel object between the flywheel and the casing that surrounds it. Be careful not to damage the teeth that the starter motor engages. If there is no access plate to the flywheel on the del Sol, you might be able to remove the starter and arrest the flywheel there. The crankshaft pulley bolt is one of the hardest to remove that I have encountered. Good luck.

No no you shouldnt. Then you will be removing the clutch and flywheel because you brook a tooth.

First try putting it in gear and stepping on the brakes. If that does not work get a pully tool. If you have air tools this also should not be a problem and it should just zip right off.

do you guys not understand how easy it is to break a tooth? Just do it the correct way and get the tool or use air tools.

no, do it the correct way and don't touch the crank pulley if you're just pulling the head. Look at the lower cover and you'll see a rubber cap below the engine mount. Rmove said plug and there is the 14mm tensioner bolt. Loosen, and slide belt off cam and remove head. Honda thinks of things like this.

Use a strap or chain wrench and a breaker bar. Wrap the chain/strap wrench around the pully, and get a large breaker bar and impact socket.

I've actually had that method work when an impact gun hasn't.

lol this guy is correct I guess I could have told you that in the first place. Do it this way unless you plan on replacing the timing belt at the same time or the water pump.

Who says I'm using the teeth?

However, I will admit that I skimmed through the thread when I first read it, and Evs-One definitely has the best method; no need to remove the pulley in the first place.

Just cracking that bolt loose should cause the spring to release and let you get some slack in that belt. Your tensioner might be stuck somehow. I was able to slide my belt off the the cam pulley with just a small bit of slack and even put it back on when I did a head swap. Keep at it and good luck!

On a side note, have you guys tried this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ...28013

I bought one to pull a crank bolt that I couldn't budge with an air impact and it worked great! Had 2 cheater bars....one on the tool and the other on a breaker bar with the socket.

Personally, I'd just remove the valve cover, slide the belt off the cams, remove the head, deal with putting the timing belt back on after you're done w/ the head. If you have a DOHC, I don't know if you can do it, but I hate dealing w/ my tensioner so that's what I do when I have to remove the belt on my y8.
