Default Crank Seal & Cam Seal Position

(98 Civic LX 125k miles)
I'm changing the timing belt and related items. I removed the crank and cam seals for replacement. Now I can't remember how deep they were originally. I've installed the cam seal until it stopped going in, and it sits pretty deep, like ~5mm inset.

Is that too deep? Maybe just tap it in until it's flush? Same question for the crank seal. Thanks.

So you did not take the cam out, correct? You just took off the cam gear and took the old seal out and put the new one in? You should be fine. Look at the picture here, that is how far it is in normally.

The crank seal should be about flush with the casting around it IIRC.

Right, just removed the seals. Thanks for the photo. Your photo shows the seal to be flush with the outside surface of the hole. There appears to be space behind that seal that would allow the seal to be pressed in further, and I think that's what I have done. So I'll remove it and set it in flush. Thanks.

buy a new seal. do NOT re install the cam seal or you will have leaks.

I think he has a new seal, are you saying he can't re-position the new seal without it leaking? I think he'll probably be fine.

if the seal has been installed then there is literally almost no way to "remove" it and RE install it.

Needs to get a new seal REGARDLESS....

Seals are difficult to remove without damage and I nicked each one getting them out. So I used new ones, only $13 for the pair.

Thanks for the input.
