Default Cracked Tranny - can it be welded safely?

I bought a complete b18b1 swap from a friend locally, and spent a week prepping, painting the bay, and installing the b18b1 in my 1995 Del Sol Si. Everything was good unitl about 20mins after filling the tranny with fluid.

It left a small puddle which led me to believe that I may have spilled some while filling.. It was too small to worry about..

I drove it home, and came out the next day to see a puddle under my car..

I jacked it up to take a better look at what was going on under there..

Best pic I could find:

There is a cap on the end of the tranny that is removable with a ratchet..
What I believe happened was that the previous owner had taken that cap off by accident, and replaced it when he realized that it wasn't the drain plug.. I guess that he over tightened it when replacing it, because it cracked on the bottom, the crack starts at the bottom and is in a cresent shape back toward the engine... It is about an inch long, and about a centimeter wide..

My question after all of this typing is, can this be welded, or is it something that would need more work that that?

Also, is this work that the average transmission shop can tackle, or would I be best suited finding another person to do this work (aluminum welder or someone like that)

I will get pics tomorrow if I can...

Yeah jb weld will probaly work just fine, but you could take it to have it heliarked (i dont know how to spell it but it means to have aluminum welded)

if it's leaking out oil then it mist be a nice crack. if it's just a hairline crack then yes, jb weld it. if its nice size, then like the other guys said you're going to have to have it heli-arched. spelling??

Here are pics of the actual crack on my transmission.. I guess my description was pretty far off what the crack actually looks like..

I was kinda pissed when I noticed it. I guess it messed up my vision and I saw what I wanted to. Should be too hard for a welder to do correct?I hope not..

Any idea what a weld would cost for that thing?

GUY GUY GUY! What do you know? I did the same MOTHER FAWKEN thing like a year ago. Took it to some welder and he tried to do it but was unsuccessful. Most places want you to take your tranny off, dip it in acid, and then they'll weld it for you. They do this because its aluminum and aluminum is a bitch to weld.

To make this story short, I got it welded by the guy who did a shitty *** job because it still leaked. Paid him like $80 and wasted 2 days. At the end I went to Autozone and got some "QuikSteel" Its an epoxy that you kneed together and just mold it onto the crack. It has held up since and NO leaks.

Before you try to put the Quiksteel on there, clean it with some carb cleaner and try to make it as clean as possible. DO NOT try to tighten that bolt any tighter than it is. That piece will just crack right off!

It solidifies pretty fast and you'll be ok after 24 hr. Check for oil leak the next few days... If none, you're good to go.

I hope this helps.

the same ******* thing happend to my ls tranny about this same ******* time last year. me and my dad did some **** we drilled three holes around the piece where it cracked off then put pins around it to support it, and some jb weld type stuff but it was different then jb weld cuz it could withstand more heat, and did that. let it dry for 24 hrs and not a problem since, its been exactly a year since it happend

try the jb weld stuff and if it works then great. just make sure you keep checking ur fluids and make sure it isn't leaking. It doesn't matter what you do to me, i took mine to our friends shop and they welded a cracked/destroyed bolt hole by heli-arch.

Well Im going to pick up the tools from the garage and try the quiksteel method..

Being broke, this is right in my ballpark.. I hope it holds up..

I'll take pictures and post it up tonight or tomorrow.

trust me as long as you clean it well with carb cleaner and try to get as much oil out of the crack as possible before using the quik steel... it will be good Oh yea, dont try to go cheap on the quick steel and only put line on the crack. Literally just get a nice piece and "MOLD" it into the crack and around the entire thing--leave a space for the ratchet hole... G' Luck buddy

I sealed it all up with the quiksteel, but now it seems like the ratchet hole(plug) is leaking through the threads.. I will have to let the stuff set and see if there are leaks anywhere else.. I am not going cheap with the stuff.. If I have to, I'll cover the whole tranny in it.. lol

I just want to drive without fearing that my tranny will leak till empty.

I will check it later tonight, and again in the morning.. In the meantime, i have to find a good way to clean the puddle of oil off the driveway at work..

BTW.. what exactly is the plug for? If it is leaking from the thread of that plug, and I don't think that I will remove it any time soon, I may have to seal it with something to stop the leak there..

Didn't knead some of it good enough I guess, after work I checked on it, the bottom portion was rock hard, but the upper portion that I filled it flaked off.. where they meet is still solid as well, guess i will have to jack that baby up tomorrow and plaster this crap all over it.. I want to drive my car so bad

thanks for the tip though, the hardened quik steel seems like its a bullet proof fix.. why pay for welding if it will work as good as it seems like it will?

That stuff is good...

I honestly doubt you'll ever unbolt that hole so just plaster the whole thing like i did. Just make sure you leave the "SQUARE" pattern uncovered just incase you EVER need to take it out. You just have to slam it with a screwdriver and a hammer to crack it or something...

I hope this stuff works for you man. It did wonders for me!
