I recently picked up a 93 Civic VX Hatch. When I first got it I remember it running at around 2k rpm on the freeway at around 75mph in 5th gear. I happen to notice a few days later and for the next week or so it would run at around 2.5k at the same speeds. No noticeable running differences in the car besides the rpm difference. For some reason I'm now back to running at around 2k again.

Is this normal? Maybe caused by outside temperature change or something? It does seem to be affecting my gas mileage a bit so if it's the sign of a part needing replaced or cleaned out I'll give it a shot.




Also, when at low rpms, for example I'll say 1.5k-2.5k, it seems the fuel curve is a bit off or something. That's the best way I can explain it. It's most noticeable in second gear at the low rpms. It breaks up slightly and sputters a bit until it seems to catch up and start moving. It's a real noticeable difference when it opens up which is usually around 2.8k or so but sometimes it happens at around 2.2k or somewhere in between. It's not bad to the point where it wants to stall or anything like that but there is a very noticeable change between the low rpm breaking up and when it kicks in.

Is this just the vtech-e working or does it need some sort of service? Wouldn't mind making it a bit smoother in the low rpm range if I could.

unless your clutch is slipping badly I can't see any reason for the rpm change in 5th at the same speed cruise

check your plugs and tune up stuff for the stutter

Clutch seems fine.

For the low rpm issue, the plugs and wires are brand new. The situation was there before the new plugs and wires as well.

the only thing that could change the rpm change in 5th gear would be if you changed your rim size but other than that i cant think of anything.

I don't know either??? Seems a bit weird to me but I seem to be getting variations in the gas mileage as well. I'll have to watch it a bit closer and see if I can figure anything out. Unless maybe the gauges are acting up everyone once in a while and the variations in gas mileage are unrelated?? Just thought someone may have experienced this before and could let me know something.

Anyone with any ideas on the low rpm break up?

I'll have to pay more attention to these issues and see if I can figure something out. Neither of them are major issues or need addressed immediately, just wondering if anyone had insight on them.

yeah eg tachs are known to be off ramdomly.
