Default a couple questions about rack and pinions.

well here goes. my friend has this friend that has a bad rack and pinion on her car. she took it to a mechanic and told her that they were gonna charge her around 5 bills. so heres where i come in, my friend wants me to replace her rack and pinion and i figured i'd only charge around 2 bills. how hard is it to replace a rack and pinion? the car is a Altima, not the new body one, but the gen before it. i know its not a honda (duh) but i come to you guys for some help. she also has a manual for her car, and i've got the power tools and **** but never had the experience of changing a rack and pinion. bottom line: is it a bitch? should i even attemp this? tia

a Fiero is a MR POS anyways...not comparable to your Altima.

Shouldn't be too bad. Just disconnect the fluid lines, disconnect the U joint to the column, and tie rods and the mounting bolts. Just buy a cheap service manual and get an allignment after

Mid engine, Rear weel drive- meaning you don't have the powerplant in your way when trying to remove the steering rack

sadly, my mom had one of these. it may be a pain, because ****** nissan doesnt make it easy to do work. they suck ***. **** nissan.
sorry, i get pissed sometimes.

anyways, im not positive, but i think that thing had some kinda variable power steering. i do remember lookin at it, and it looked hard to get to. it will probably be a bitch to get out, because i remember seein that like everything was integrated with ****.
so in short, if you wanna do it yourself, get a helms manual, and go somewhere where they have a lot of tools. the book will tell you if you need anything special.
