If I recall correctly it was somewhat of a double exported vehicle there. Parts were shipped to the U.S and then assembled in the U.S and then shipped back into Japan - I wish I could remember where I read about that damn it!
But yes coupes just were not nearly as big there.

Re: Coupes made in Japan (B18C5-EH2)
yes there were coupes in japan. i cant blabber off for a fact if they were made there or made here and imported there with all the standards. they DO have all the japanese safety standard stuff like the plastic headlights, corners, sidemarkers. they have the jdm interior and everything else, just a coupe.
in all the stuff ive seen on coupes in japan like on japanese yahoo personal pages, the owner always mentioned "honda of america ej1" for the 93-95 models. they were all automatic d16a. yes yes u r saying d16a? but yes they had a d16 sohc vtec like the d16z6 here, but badged as a d16a. came auto.
and i DO have some japanese web sites with pictures of the 96+ style civic coupes as well. same thing. right hand drive, jdm headlamps, sidemarkers, interior, etc etc etc.
nope, they were NOT very popular, but u gotta look at it like this. over in japan from a performance standpoint, honda is not a popular choice period when u compare them to the other japanese car manufacturers, primarily nissan and toyota. most kids in japan dont save for civics, so of course u wont see many coupes either. thats two strikes against them already. civic first of all, then even rarer being a non successful coupe (didnt sell much there). and then to top it off, only available in automatic. yuck.
but i dont care where the hell my cars from. i love my coupe.

Did they ever make coupes in Japan...
CiViC coupes are designed in the USA for the domestic car market and are made ONLY in the USA. They are made of 90% domestic parts and are officially designated as a domestic car by US regulatory agencies. CiViC sedans, on the other hand, are designed in Japan for the world market and are built all over the place.
Personally, I cannot stand CiViC sedans. If Honda didn't make a CiViC coupe, I wouldn't be driving a Honda. I'd be driving a Ford Mustang coupe; the CiViC's closest competitor IMHO.
Anyway, hope this helps to clear things up. I'll be glad to furnish proof of this, ad nauseum, when I get home. I'm at my sister-in-laws house right now and need to get back to the turkey...

Okay, I'm home...
That's rather interesting considering Honda start making CiViC coupes until 1993...

Also new for 1993 was the exciting Civic Coupe, assembled exclusively in North America (East Liberty, Ohio to be exact - bdc). This new expansion of the Civic line provided a more personalized style while still remaining a practical choice for consumers. The EX Coupe with option package was the only car in its class with standard dual airbags (SRS).

You know, I always feel bad when I have to break this news to ppl, but Santa Claus isn't real, there is no such thing as the Tooth Fairy, and the Honda CiViC coupe is a domestic car made exclusively in Easy Liberty, Ohio, by an odd mixture of scab labor and state-of-the-art robots. They aren't made in Japan, Canuckistan or anywhere else in the world.
I'm sorry if this comes as a shock to you, but this is truth, not fiction. You can turn this into a "I thought I heard" or "someone told me" or "I think I read somewhere" thread if you want, but that isn't going to change a thing.
Been there; done it! I can keep posting hard links and quotes all day long if you want. As Yoko Ono once said, "You can never un-know what you know." If you want to stick your collective heads in the sand and pretend that the Honda CiViC coupe is an import, go ahead, but it's a little late now, having read this far into the thread...
