Constructive Advice and Opinions: Turbo SOHC or H22a4. I'm stuck.

I know.. do what I think I should do. But sometimes, it's good to get an outlook on what others think.

The scoop--

I currently own a 1993 Civic DX Coupe with a d16z6 swap. Dx transmission. The swap has 150xxx on it, bought from a friend and runs perfect. Just doesn't have Vtec wired up right now, haven't gotten around to it. It's unmodded at the moment.

I have sitting for this car: Tein S-Tech Springs, A set of wheels, and an Apex'i Turbo kit that's almost complete... needs FMIC, Fuel Management, and a few miscellaneous parts like boost gauage and controller. Stuff like that.

I REALLY want to boost. I think it would be fun first of all, and it'll produce alot of quick power.

On the other hand-- I got a killer deal on a 1993 Prelude Si.

It has -- H22a4 Swap with papers. Mileage: 60,000. It has an h23 ecu, which means no Vtec at the moment. Shaved doorhandles and antennae, Coil-overs, Aem cold air intake, and catback exhaust. It needs paint, but the guy selling it to me is a friend that paints cars also so that's not really a problem. It also has a set of seventeen inch wheels which I have yet to find out what they are. The body is in good condition, alarm system. Stuff like that. The outrageous thing is the price: 3000.

A) I can keep the Civic, boost it, have fun with it and sell it later on. IT's cheaper to mod out, and a D-series motors are laying here and there if I blow it. I could easily take fof the kit and sell it for cheap JUST to get swapped.

B) I could sell my car for 2500-3000 in Auto_Trader ( it's already there ), buy the Prelude, sell the Apex'i Kit for 1200 ( Someone wants to buy it this coming week. ), and buy an H22 ecu, VAFC, and have money left over to paint and other small things.

I'm having trouble deciding... it sucks bad. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emhammer.gif

go with the lude. it has less miles and all and you could always boost the H.

I would turbo the civic myself.. But, thats just me, i think a turbo would be alot more fun, and as you said, the D series is easy to come by if you blow her down the road..

BOOST, not really a big fan of how preludes' look

Civic Hx-T 08-01-2004 11:16 AM

I LOVE how the bb4/5 Chassis preludes look. Not stock anyway. I actually already had a WingsWest RS Lip kit, JDM headlights, and Fogs in line for it from a few friends around here.

Boosting an H takes more than just popping on a Turbo kit. If you really want to make serious power you'll have to resleeve and stuff. I've read up about it already here on the boards.

More opinions. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif Thanks to those that posted.

Adding onto that--

The odometer on the Prelude reads 130... With that motor in it, I could resell it and get at least 6000 on Auto_Trader...

Go back, buy a Civic, buy another turbo kit, though I DOUBT i'll get an Apex'i.. damnit... and boost then with more cash on the side.

Re: (Civic Hx-T)

You know if you had said something about this last week i would have drove up to you and bought your coupe or even the lude. But i still think that you should do the lude, i mean you could always slap that ecu in and have some real fun. Or just do some small boost then you will have the best of both worlds.

Civic Hx-T 08-01-2004 11:44 AM

It really is a hard decision.

But I could sell it like I said then come back to good gas mileage and SOHC boost.

Re: (Civic Hx-T)

keep the lude, gas mileage is not a huge issue, its not like switching from a honda to a viper or something like that, you will still get good reliable 4 cylinder gas mileage, and preludes are just a hell of a lot nicer than a civic, i mean i have a civic, and i LOVE my friends prelude si, and for the record, you said it had a h22, if im not mistaken, prelude si's have H23A1, non vtec, theyre still fast regardless

Cain Marko 08-01-2004 11:50 AM

Re: (turtlecx92)

oops, just realized you said it was swapped, but thats even better, H22 in that car will run like 14's, with the dx tranny in your car, even if its turboed, its not gonna be THAT fast, d series ratios are shoddy

Civic Hx-T 08-01-2004 11:51 AM

For the record:

DX tranny is only .06 seconds slower than an EX.

It really doesn't make that much of a difference unless it's a VX/CX/HX tranny.

Just something to think about.

And yeah, I love the hell out of bb4/5 chassis preludes. I personally like them better than 6's.

If you know alot about SOHC turbo though, I don't think you'd say it wasn't that good. It really is when done correctly. Alot of the SOHC Turbo charged Civics put down good numbers--

I think-- A Civic DX with 170whp ( 7psi on the Hack should do this to a d16z6 ), will walk a 1993 Si Chassis Prelude with h22a4 and bolt-ons. That's my opinion. Which is why it makes this so hard.

aphex23 08-01-2004 12:03 PM

Re: (Civic Hx-T)

yeah man, a properly turbo'd, and tuned d16z6 put down some mighty fine numbers.. Put some money into the engine man, and you will have yourself a fast car..., but, on the flip side, preludes are fast, and you could make it a whole hell of a lot faster with some work.. But, I guess you need to decide, do you want a fast civic, or a fast lude? I guess that would be the real question, which car do you like best? Regardless of what you plan to do to it..?

Civic Hx-T 08-01-2004 12:11 PM

I like both of them--

I've really always wanted a 1992-1996 Prelude, but they're expensive for someone who has alot of stuff to pay.

SOHC BOOST is cheaper though, and I can make my Civic look how I want just as cheap. Not to mention that I already have a perfect Apex'i Kit sitting in my house. The damned thing is in SUPERB condition. That's discouraging to sell.

Arg. Decisions.

This sounds like a good idea, but I don't really have the money to sleeve and stuff like that with an H22. So if I boosted, it'd be a home made kit and I wouldn't EVER boost more than 8 psi.

And even thought having something different would be nice, having a Turbo Street Civic will always catch eyes and eat food.

Trust me I know-- everyone has a Shitvic. LoL. But not everyone has a turbo charged Civic. It's just something for me to think about. Thanks for the reply mang.

ok...im doing single cam turbo in my hatch too so i wasnt givin that a https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emthdown.gif boosted shitivics are always fun https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

but if youre going that road id suggest getting a new longblock, maybe jdm d15, 160,xxx was it? thats a lot of miles to boost, might be a little unsafe...id pick up another single cam for 3-400 and swap it out before you boost https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

i think 8psi on a H22 would be REAL good amounts of power, with the right tuning you could yield lots of power out of that, remember its .6 liters bigger than your D16, so its gonna respond to boltons or FI much differently

I got the complete swap, tranny and all for 300, paid a good friend 260 to replace all gaskets, timing belt, seals, flush tranny fluid, a complete tune up on the motor. And it was his motor, he's a technician and it came out of his daily driver. This motor will be good for boost.

I agree with you. It would respond alot differently. And it'll be on an Obd1 ECU because i'll go and get a 1995 Prelude Vtec ECU to run it.

Bserieskllr 08-01-2004 01:25 PM

turbo the civic get a johnnyracecar front mount intercooler and uberdata just gotta buy like the burner and what not but will cost like 100-200 sot thats boost guage is $40 an a mbc for 30 thats like 370-470 more and you have a turbo civic go with that. I think you would feel better on a car you did most of the work on then one that has alot of stuff done to it and remember modded car like that was prolly beat up on.

Cain Marko 08-01-2004 01:49 PM

Re: (Bserieskllr)

well shit dude, why dont you just sell your turbo setup and single cam, and put the H22 in your car https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif , or just sell the civ, get the lude, sell the 17's, get some 16 inch black slips with a polished lip, get your car painted silver, and your set

ILLICON3000 08-01-2004 04:19 PM

i don't like prelude's so id go with the civic.

but the lude does come with a sunroof ac ps pw windows and all that shit that some people like.

id rather just have the lude, clean it up real nice, drop it and put an exhaust on it, turbo it down the road, i mean how much power do you freaking want out of this thing? i mean your single cam turbo with a dx tranny, like i said before, will not accelerate all that great compared to the lude, but if you do turbo the civic, put an ex/si tranny on it and im sure you would be a lot happier
