Considering Purchasing a 94' Si Coupe
It has approx 240k km's (150k miles)
What are the most common things I should be looking for - what tends to wear out around this mileage. The car I'm looking at has all it's records and is an original owner.
I'd like to make sure the common problems have been fixed (i.e. wheel bearings etc) so that I don't end up with huge headaches down the road.

Re: Considering Purchasing a 94' Si Coupe (CRXTAZC)
Check for rust, ask when the timing belt was last changed, check for smoke out of the exhuast, take off the oil cap to see if they changed the oil often (discoloration). Little things like wheel bearings shouldnt be too much of a problem.

It's a Honda!! There's no such thing as huge headaches unless someone actually does something to the car and doesn't know what they're doing.
Good luck with it!!!!

Re: Considering Purchasing a 94' Si Coupe (99CivicSiBrian)
The reason I'm asking is that I had a CRX that caused me a million headaches, and I don't feel like going through that fun stuff again.
There is some minor rust but I'm more worried about the underbody.
Here's a couple recent pics of the car - I havn't seen it yet.
Looks to be in really good shape for a Canadian car. And it is said to have original paint...

Could be just smaller tires w/ the rims I am thinking.
I wouldn't be buying the rims anyways, and the clear corners would be going out the door.

Ha my hatch is like that, higher front then back. My struts are bad I'm sure that has something to do with it, but I've seen a lot of hatches like mine..maybe its normal.

i had this same car and just sold it recently. it lasted forever and it also had high milage. mine also had the factor paint and was still good looking. the car your looking at looks clean, but like CRXTAZC said looking for any smoke coming out the tail pipe and look closly to under the car, make sure its not leaking any oil or anything like that. it it was well taken care of, then you should be fine. good luck with it...

Yeah, I will obviously check for exhaust related issues, he said it doesn't burn any oil but I guess that's hard to tell if he just changed the oil or topped it up.
I went through a d16a6 and a dohc zc with oil burning probs so I should be able to detect it pretty quickly.
It's e-tested in Ontario which has fairly strict guidelines so I think i've fairly safe there...

I think you're right.
And my front end looks super high too! Does your Canadian civic lack A/C? Mine does and I Think thats why it's so high.

Yeah, think pw and pl are rare in the Canadian ones.
This car has no A/C as well, and has a stupid sub box in the trunk hence the way the car sits.
Went to look at it last night, hard to see in the pics but there is some rust coming through under the gas door, a small hole ahead of the rear wheel near the rocker on the driver's side, and the rear fenders are rusted through approx. 4" long and like 1" high..
Obviously these are all honda spots... only thing that is turning me away from the car is that it has 2 or 3 fairly good shopping cart dents and a line from being keyed on the driver's side abotu 2'.
It has every bill since new, couldn't find anything for front end stuff. It feels relatively tight but at 150k miles I'm sure it's going to need a complete front end / complete bushings / complete suspension.
Not sure if I want to get that into it being more of a beater...

SMoke doesnt always mean bad, could be running rich.
He has dif rims and a dif shifter, Im sure the car was roded on.
Also a lil trick, stick your finger in the muffler outlet, and wipe up or to the side on the pipe, see if you pull out a **** load of carbon. There will always be some, but if it turns your finger very black walk away.
When I was shopping for mine, I did this to a few for private dealers, and I had a guy tell me "the oil must be leaking into the exhuast to cause all that black ****" No, its cause the motor is shot.

Black smoke isn't bad = running rich.
White smoke = sorta bad.
White Steam = run in other direction.
