Default Connector Pins/Terminals

I generally hang around CarolinaHondas but figured I'd seek your expertise as well since I kinda need to get this figured out as it's not for my car. Here is my post from yesterday. I had a guy suggest it looked similar to the pins in the OBDI connectors, but I pulled a couple from a buddy's car today and they're not the same. Thanks in advance.

Ok guys, I have no idea how many of you do much with wiring, but there's this guy that has a 97 Civic LX and he hired me to do a timing belt/water pump but as soon as I tightened the last bolt he mentioned he was having issues with his power windows and door locks.

So onto the issue... after some turning of pages and schematic reading and testing and other diagnostic procedures, I have found some broken wires in the harness that runs from the cabin to the door. A buddy has a parts car but the wires are broken right at the terminals (Plenty of properly colored wires). This plug is on the end of a fairly large section of the cabin harness which is not cheap, or simple. I don't really care to cut and splice a junkyard portion in there because There's no guessing as to how long that same flexing bunch of wires will last after all of that trouble SO....

I found very little online but I came across a service bulletin for acura with part numbers for pins and terminals. Went to Flow and those guys denied anything not having to do with buying an entire harness so I drove the 1/2 mile up the road to Acura and they were more than willing to help but didn't have any good pictures or diagrams of individual pins. They can look up the connector and find the pins used but I don't have a teg to dig through. I had a buddy pull his door connector (teg) and they don't look like the same terminals inside. SO.... I looked a little closer and found a TSB from 00 that is pretty much identical to the one for Acura with slightly different part numbers. I found a picture of the terminal repair set for ACURA on google but even though some of the pictures look close, They're not quite dead-on enough for me to order.

**Edit: if you'd like to see the TSB, you can google "Honda TSB 00-099" and it's the first result**

I'd like to just re-pin the connector with OEM wire (that hasn't been flexing at the door) and then splice, solder, and heatshrink inside the car where it won't be moving to hopefully come up with a repair that will outlast the car. So, short of going up to Flow Honda to start WWIII with the parts guys by shoving a TSB in their face and demanding they look harder, does anyone by any chance have any info or know someone, etc that can find out the part number to the terminals used in the female side of the driver's side door 25-pin (think 24 are all that's used) connector?? The connector is identified by Honda as C556. I can get the crimper and I have fashioned a de-pinning tool with a paperclip and some sandpaper that works.

Sorry for the long post, and if I can provide more information please let me know. Thanks guys.

This wont be much help to you, but most of those pins are only available in packs of $50 and they're not cheap at all.

According to the TSB, the refills are packs of 25 and I have come across pricing of a tops of 25 cents each making a refill under $7. If I had to pay $20, I would. I need a part # or a diagram. The guy at the Acura parts desk was very helpful and immediately pulled up several screens where it shows what pins are in what connector, but without matching the pin to an Acura that doesn't help much. Surely Honda has the same screens... I mean they ARE the same people. Anybody work at a dealership? lol.

They have a possible tyco replacement here. Otherwise general consensus is get the pig tail and solder it on.

Yeah, I read that post. It was one of the few I found while googling around. Had someone suggest pulling a different part of harness in the car that was interior and wasn't flexed all the time. Before I go to pull a car apart, does anyone have one gutted laying around that can confirm terminals are the same in say....the radio area or somewhere remotely accessable that will have at least 25 pins?

In that same post, a guy that works at a dealership mentions they have a pin set. I used to work at one many many years ago and I know they try to keep stuff simple and quick to make $$ so even though the "proper" fix is available, they don't invest in it.

If all else fails, I suppose I will try a little more aggressive approach at the dealership. The guy at Acura was super nice and immediately pulled up several screens where he could name the connector and find the pins/terminals used, but without matching the terminals to an Acura that does not do much good. I'm thinking there have to be similar screens in the HONDA database.... *sigh* If only I had access.

I need these pins too. Been looking for a while with no luck. Those pins are only in that plug and no where else in any part of the harness. I do know there is two different size pins in that plug.

The wires at the pins at the doors is not your problem. Your problem (well, car owner's problem) is that *something* is causing the wires at the pins on the door to wear prematurely. I can almost guarantee you that 95%+ of 6G Civics still have wiring intact at the door without an issue. This could be some sort of accidental original installation issue - it happens sometimes. Who knows. Your time would be better invested trying to diagnose what is causing this wear.

But, if you replace with a junkyard pigtail not only will it cost you nearly nothing, not to mention labour will be 100x less (plus think of how much time you've already invested in solving this "problem" running around), it should last another 10 years, even if you don't figure out what's causing the premature wear. Is that good enough? And if you replaced with new pins, your install would last you ......... the SAME amount of time. Figure out what's causing the problem and both installs should last the life of the car.

Well, I made a LITTLE progress. I called a dealership in Cali that I had dealt with before since I have had a busy week and haven't had time to drive to the local one. At first, he told me the same thing. "Buy the whole harness", but then I gave him the TSB # and he pulled it up. He still swears he can't buy the pins individually which makes no sense because these kits were supposedly shipped to every dealership at the time of the TSB (2000) so when they run out of 1 type of pin are they supposed to order an entire kit to refill that one?

Either way, he priced the entire kit as $95.00 which is NOT bad as that comes with crimpers, the pin removal tool set, and various terminals and splice connectors. I suppose I will proceed sometime this weekend with taking a printed copy of the TSB to my local dealership and see what I can find. Still erks me that Acura can pull up the pin part number by connector, but Honda seems to have no clue about this. If all else fails, I'll order the entire kit just to have it when I need it. I will update so the next poor soul googling this will have something to go on.

As far as premature failure, the 96 civic is going on 18 since they're released sometime in the previous year... That's a lot of years to stress this connector/wiring. Every car is different in the amount of times the door has been opened, how far it was opened, etc. I agree it is POSSIBLE that a junkyard harness would last 10 more years, but who knows? If I do it fresh, with unflexed wire and new pins, the chances are much higher. As far as labor goes, Hondas are my hobby. I work on my own and do the occasional side job to help relieve the weight of overpriced shops around here. Also, the guy is in no rush. He specifically told me that he would rather the time be taken and have it done "right" and he will most likely be looking over my shoulder as I perform the repair. If it was MY car? I'd probably go junkyard unless I was completely OCD.

Either way, I appreciate your input and will update with my findings. Thanks again guys.

Does anyone know which Terminal it is for 14 - 20 AWG?
If someone knows, then that Terminal/Pin can be used for all wire sizes.

Addendum:
TSB 00-099 - December 19, 2000
Cannot upload the PDF file, so unable to show the Terminals/Pins listed there.
Honda messed up and eliminated the 14 - 20 AWG Terminals/Pins needed for C556 & C557
.
