confusion w/ chassis codes

confusion w/ chassis codes
So i own a 00 civic coupe. Here on honda tech its referred to as an ek. Isnt an ek just the hatch back? Isnt my car an EJ8?? Ive been wondering this since i referred to my car as an ek and got ransacked by a bunch of nissan freaks, which actually proved to be A learning experience. I was just looking at a post about some kid that was thinking about buying a 98 civic w/ a k20 swap and the responses were "wow, an ek w/ a k20 swap for $xxxx. not bad". so what is the chassis code for a 2000 civic EX? ... i looked it up and it said ej8, along with my matching vin, so are there just confused honda-tech members or what?

if you have a 96-00 civic coupe ex you have a ej8
if you have a jdm ctr, sir, vti, etc you have a ek2,ek3,ek4,ek5,ek9 witch is type r etc.

what exactly constitutes a generic term? to me it sounds more like an incorrect term. ek refers to a platform designated chassis code for a 96-00 hatchback. its interesting to think of all the "dr.honda" know it alls that havent corrected this incorrect terminology.

People do the same thing with the 92-95's. You'll see EG thrown around all over the place, when the fact of the matter is that in the US, the only Civics that have a VIN chassis code of EG are the 4-door EX and LX 1.5L. They are both EG8. The rest are EH2 (CX, DX, VX hatches), EH3 (SI), EH9 (4-door EX 1.6L VTEC). It's just easier, however untrue, to refer to the whole generation as the EG generation. I dunno.

I tried breaking the "EG" dlang years ago - even made my name B18C5-EH2 - and it still goes on.
Just remember that's why it's called a SLANG term, not book definition.
It's just a quick way to refer to generations of cars more than anything.

I am a firm supporter in that if you want to be lazy about a designation, just call them the following:
4G = 87-91 Civic
5G = 92-95 Civic
6G = 96-00 Civic
7G = 01-05 Civic
8G = 06-?? Civic

Actually, if you have a JDM 6th gen Civic you would have a EJ7 (STD coupe), EK2 (EL/EL II hatch or unknown sedan), EK3 (Ri/RI II/VTi hatch or MI/ML/Vi sedan), EK4 (SIR/SiR II hatch or Si/Si II sedan), EK5 (RTi 4WD sedan), EK8 (LEV 4WD sedan) or EK9 (Type R/Type R Race/Type RX hatch).

Generic as in "used to denote any 6th gen Civic". Lots of people who either don't know or don't care (or because so many others use it) use the term EK to denote any 6th gen Civic. Some use it to only refer to hatchbacks, even though there are also true EK sedans. Some use it to just mean any 6th gen Civic.
Many of us bring it up occasionally, but many more flame us by saying it doesn't matter. I see it as, calling all these cars is wrong and just spreads misinformation. It only leads to a lot of confusion.
EK is not JDM. It is not the only designation for a 6th gen in Japan, nor is it only used in Japan.
You are correct in that there are no USDM EK chassis cars though.
Many people don't start out on Honda-Tech. Even more hear it elsewhere. The term EK is used all over the place. It's not just Honda-Tech.
There are also del Sols that use the EG chassis designation in the US.
