COMPRESSION NUMBERS...LOW?

Default COMPRESSION NUMBERS...LOW?

I was just recalling, a while ago i did a compression test on my car.

170
170
168
180

My USDM b16a2 has only 40k miles on is...so now I am thinking this is rather low. True or false. and why. And how much is this hurting my performance.

Warm or cold? full throttle no throttle?

Either way those look like good numbers, try a valve adjusmtnet on the low one.

yea... if its warm or cold makes a huge difference.. and make sure the throttle is blocked open...

Consistency is more important than the actual numerical values, and those look pretty good to me. As stated before, make sure the throttle is open. Having the engine warm will help, but not all that much.

This was done WOT for 4-5 cranks. Engine was probably not full operating temp.

How do i adjust the valve, and what am I adjusting it to?

One or more of my valves does make quite a LOT of noise.. so maybe its got extra play

like the guy posted above.. Consistancy is what you're looking for as long as its not too low


To adjust the valve you need to get the feeler gauge and the valve adjuster tool..

could be better, could be much worse. You dont want inconsistancy in the range of 15 PSI

well i do have 15psi between two of the cyclinders. So is the only way to fix this new piston rings?

no, it could be many things: valves leaking, valve stem seals, head gasket leaking, the list goes on. If you're concerned, do a leakdown test.

People always seem to think that compression tests are all about getting the highest possible numbers. You are looking for LARGE variances. 15psi isn't enough to cause that much of concern. Like Luserkid mentioned, try adjusting the valves and retesting. Doesn't take much in the way of valve adjustment to drop compression results significantly. Doesn't always mean there is a 'problem'.

True that it doesnt mean there is a serious problem, but a 15 PSI difference is definitely cause for concern and needs to be further checked out.

honda rates that a 20psi difference in cylinders is a concern for check...!!!

Might want to study the helms a little closer. You will see you are wrong. Check the valve lash, then have your "concern".
