Default Cold Start Problems ...

Help ME!!!!

My civic with a JDM B18C OBD1 has a brutal time starting when the engine's cold. The engine turns over fine though it won't catch; you have to keep cranking and cranking. When it finally does catch, it shakes, sputters and dies almost immediately. You have to go through the starting process a number of times before the engine will catch and stay on, though the idling is terrible, presumably because by this time I've flooded the engine. If I give it some gas though, the revs fall dramatically and the engine could die again. It sounds as though the engine's choking. I've replaced the distributor cap and rotor, battery, plugs, and wires as well as have my mechanic take a look at my distributor coil but to no avail. I was thinking it might be my Throttle Position Sensor or maybe my MAP sensor but these are expensive parts so I'm kind of hesitant about touching these until I have a better idea.

If you have any advice or suggestions, I'll be extremely greatful if you can pass them along.

Thanks in advance.

Does the car idle better and not want to stall after its warmed up? It might be your IACV thats screwed up. I removed mine and cleaned the screens a while back and it solved my up and down idling problems on cold starts. Maybe you should check that out. I also heard that your FICV could cause the same problems.

my car was a bitch to start when the ICM went but from what you're saying it doesn't sound like thats the problem, the symtoms i had were:

difficult starting

random ignition cuts with the tach dropping to zero

it ran fine until everytime the ICM went out

Is your EVAP system hooked up? I've seen a few cars where it wasn't hooked up or incorrectly hooked up and the car idled like crap.

Bump this thread right quick.
Im having a real hard time on my cold starts also.
I would sit there tryin to make the damn thing start and and when it does it sputters and chokes and sometimes dies. When I hold the gas down about 5% throttle (according to my VAFC) and I control the idle at about 2thousand it will eventually warm up and run fine.
It is NOT the IAVC for I have cleaned that about a month ago.
