Default Cold Air Intakes vs. Regular Intakes

Just wondering what the difference is. I'm thinking about getting some sort of intake, but with the cold air, I'm just worried how it's going to perform in the winter. I'm kinda retarded with cars in general, so I'm just trying to learn. Thanks.

a cai in the winter will be fine as long as you dont pack the grill in the bumper with snow!

id invest in some mesh screen for the winter to cover the whole so snow dosnt get packed in the hole or get the aem cai and cut it in half then reconnect it with a rubber connector that way you can have cai in the summers and short ram in the winter

The CAI (cold air intake) will either pull air from below the subframe or inside the fenderwell (in your car, in the fenderwell if you go with AEM i believe). The cooler air will make more HP than the ram air (I assume you meant ram air by regular intake). The difference in HP will be minimal, but during the winter, under the hood of your car gets just as hot as it does during the summer (well close) and will heat up the air being sucked into your engine with the ram air. Hope I helped!

So pretty much it doesn't really matter, both will perform in all conditions unless I do something ridiculously stupid?

Also, some of my friends told me that an intake makes some noise...is this true? Thanks for all your help.

Yes, it will be louder. Your stock intake has silencers on/around it to keep it quiet.

the colder the air coming in your engine the more dense it is. By being more dense it creates and bigger explosion in your cylinders, giving u more power.

It heat of the pipe itself is not really that big a deal because the air is moving through so fast there is no time for it to get heated back up by the pipe.

I think that for the extra money and the additional risk of engine hydrolock, i will just stick with the short air intake. Whats the difference between the 2, like 2horses if that?

i am extremely happy with my dc dac its 3in diameter too? ive had a cai it really feels the same except when the weather is cool. im not that worried on the street cause thats not my choice of race at the track i just pull out my front light instant ram air.

you really have to see dynos ran on the same car with different intakes. cai isn't always the best. the 95 si sohc vtec loses bottom and mid with the cai and is better with a short ram. try to research this more and the diameter of the pipe matters also.

I have a Tenzo...sure it's not the greatest but it does have one feature that I like. My intake came in 3 pieces, the third piece is like a crescent moon that is not shown in the pic. It connects to the second pipe and the filter connects on the other end. I can make it short ram or cold air in minutes.

This is only true depending on where you live!!! I live in Alabama=hot as hell, but say you live in -60 degree North Dakota weather. You can greatly benefit from a CAI. Also, don't let the rumor of "hydrolocking" become a factor in determining which route to go. YOU WILL ONLY HYDROLOCK YOUR MOTOR IF YOU ARE A COMPLETE MORON WHO LETS THE INTAKE SIT IN SOMETHING EQUIVALENT TO A POND OR A LAKE. The Aem bypass valve is garbage! Small amounts of water are vaporized before they even hit the throttle body. Personally, I like my CAI and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Yeah but here in alabama you do have to worry about the freak monsoon rains, and then the water not draining properly draining off the road. If you are careful in the rain (puddles) you should be fine. I have known of several ppl who drowned there engine with the CAI.

i have a short ram.and i also have piping that runs from my front bumper(2k civic)
to the front of the filter..i honestly feel that this works as well as a cai. and from my piping, it keeps my engine bay cool almost at all times..well, atleast when im on the freeway..just my 2 cents from my experience

I went with the comptech. Less chance of hydro-lock.
