yeah what he said. i built mine with a short ram and then that black strech thing from autozone with a k&n filter{thats what matters) and ran a 13.8 all mtor on street tires

cold air + good filter + least amount of bends + smooth surface (metal) = best possible intake.
custom make one or buy one, theyre all about the same.

Yeah, just get whatever one you like.
I bought an "Iceman" intake a few years ago. It's entirely made out of plastic. However plastic is a good insulator, which is good if you want to keep heat exchange to a minimum. So it probably makes .00005hp more than an all-metal eBay special. Probably the only interesting thing about is that it's the loudest damn intake I've ever heard - it works on the same principle as a trumpet, slowly increasing width = loud-*** noise coming out the filter end.
Depending on what modifications you do, and what you hope to accomplish (drag, auto-x, amateur track, etc.) a cold air can actually be worse than a short ram for performance. But it really depends on what you do to the engine and what you intend to accomplish... but if this is all you intend to do, there isn't enough of a difference on a performance level to care. Just get whichever one appeals to you financially, aesthetically, whatever...

I had an iceman (actually still have it just dont use it) before going turbo. I agree it is a loud intake but the reduced heat transfer, K+N fliter, and being an actual cold air intake had me sold on it. I guess thats why I still have it laying around.
Of course it all depends on what you want and how much you are willing to spend in the end.

Proper cooler air intakes make power through intake pipe design, freer flowing filter, and cooler air temperatures (though probably not as big of a factor).
Intake pipes, like everything else that is solid, has its own inherent resonance characteristics. At certain RPMs a well-designed pipe can hit a sweet spot, resulting in a bit more power. To give an idea about inherent resonance, have you ever wondered why a some buildings will collapse in a 5.0 earthquake but withstand a 7.0 earthquake?
But with that said, only expect 1-3hp peak increase, no matter what the design/company.
I tested both an Iceman and AEM V1 on the same Civic on the same Dynojet 248C and the Iceman made 3hp peak with a peak gain of 6hp at 4400rpm while the AEM only had a 2hp peak and peak gain of about 2-3hp around 5200rpm. AEM actually lost 1-2hp below 3300rpm.
And a "short ram" intake doesn't "ram" any air into the engine.
If CARB matters to you, get one that has an EO#.
