I have heard that you can, but would you really want to....? They make them for a reason. Bump for more experience.

In most cases you do not need the spring compressor when installing coilover sleeves on struts. You can lower the perch enough to be able to put the top hat on. However, removing the old spring from the strut will require a compressor. You can take the spring off without the compressor, but it is dangerous and not recommended.

you don't need them to install coil over, but sometime people like to have them to get the old springs off, i like to use a towel, and a 5 gallon bucks
