Code 71...what could it be?
I posted this awhile back but never got any feedback, so I'll try again. Occasionally when I decelerate from say, 70 mph to 45 or so, my check engine light comes on. The mph isn't exact but you get he point. I check the blinks and it's a code 71. And this only happens when decelerating. It doesn't seem to affect performance though. If I turn off the car and restart it, the cel is off. I have new plug wires and it has been doing this since I did the swap a few months ago. Any ideas?

Thanks, I knew it was a misfire already. I just don't know what can cause it? I'd rather know what the culprit most likely is before I go replacing parts and spending money unnecessarily. I've already replaced the plugs and wires. I guess the next step would be cap and rotor. Is there anything else it could possibly be?

My friend had that happen to him on his 2000 LS, he got code 71 72 and 73. We replaced his p.o.s. spark plugs (Champion...never use them, ever) and that fixed it

retard your timing a little...
I always recomend the msd cap and coil but there are plenty of LOW number 1/4 milers out there with stock coil and cap...
So for a fix to your problem I'd definately recomend at least checking to see where the timing is at...
also you may want to check your pcv valve... it could be letting too much oil past it during decel... that oil in the comb. chamb. might cause knocking... get a catch can or filter in-between...
good luck.

Re: Code 71...what could it be? (Turbo E)
I'm using ngk v's. Good plugs. I always use them. No I'm not "boosting". Stock motor, only cone filter on stock intake pipe and crappy 2.25 exhaust. Honestly, I haven't checked the timing(I don't have a light or know how to use one). I don't really want to swap out the coil and cap for msd ones. I'd rather keep OEM until I decide to boost it. I have an msd cap and coil on my crx and I have problems, but I've always had ignition problems with it. After I fix one thing, something else pops up. It's a totally different story with that car and I don't even want to start.
I'll check it with the timing light Sunday. My father-in-law has one. Thanks for the info.
