Default Clutch Whine - Help Needed

Lately I have noticed a high pitched whine coming from what I think could be the clutch.

When I crank the engine, there is a whine coming from under the hood. If I barely rest my foot on the clutch pedal (or fully depress the pedal, for that matter), the whine goes away. The sound is present whether I am in neutral and stationary or running down the highway at 80mph but it only happens when my foot is off the clutch. The whine goes away each time I shift.

Anyone have any idea what it could be. I have heard it might be the input shaft bearing or the throw out bearing.

Sounds like it's the input shaft (or main shaft) bearing. $20 part, lot of labor. But if you're patient and have a shop manual, you can tackle it yourself with a free weekend.

If it were the throw out bearing, it would make the sound when you pressed the pedal, not when your foot was off it.

if it's the ISB, it will quiet down when your foot is on the clutch.

Makes sense if you think about it. the TOB is only in use while you have the clutch depressed, so it would only make noise at that point. The ISB is only spinning when your clutch is engaged (i.e. you're not touching the pedal) so that woul be when it would make noise.

I don't know what those 3 are talking about. But I suspect, as is often here, one person got it mixed up then a few agree to bump their post count.

edit: BTW: there's a decent how-to for the ISB in the FAQ, might want to check that out.
