Default Clutch or tranny?

I was driving around looking for a new job with my friend and the light turned red ahead of me, so i down shifted into 3rd and looked down at my tach and saw that it was almost at redline so i hurried up and pushed the clutch it. When i started to pull away from the light in first it started making this really nasty grind/rattle sound. In between rpms of 1800 to 2700 it makes no noise it sounds just fine but anything above and below those rpms it makes the same noise. If i sit still and let the car run in neutral it still makes the noise and it's kinda loud but as soon as i push in the clutch it doesn't make the sound nearly as loud, but yet it still slightly makes it. So if anyone knows if this is my clutch or transmission then please let me know. Thanks a lot

I was thinking the same thing but, i talked to this mechanic at this local shop. He told me that he thinks it's the clutch because it is off balance or something and it about to completly come off. He said that if it was the transmission then i would have noticed problems a long time ago instead of it suddenly happening. I'm really not sure yet. He hasn't checked the car out in person though because i have it on jackstands and the axles pulled out to go ahead and put the new clutch it. I need one anyways so no matter what it needs replaced. Oh something i didn't mention was that when i drained the tranny fluid there was no metal shavings. That's the reason i don't think it's the tranny. Any more input?

I want to say clutch. It'll make those sounds sitting in neutral because the clutch is engaged to the flywheel when you're not stepping on the clutch pedal.

Well, at least for your wallet's benefit I hope it's just the clutch.

btw where is greenfield Indiana??

The master cylinder could be sticking, keeping the clutch semi engaged when you let out the pedal.
