How close to the top are we talking? There is an adjustment screw on your pedal near the top that you can use to adjust the pedal. Loosen up the nut, use your hand to spin it in or out which adjusts the pedal closer or away from the floor, re-tighten the nut.

My clutch does kind of the same thing, won't engage till I'm about 3/4 the way up, but I think that's pretty normal? Correct me if I'm wrong.

it SHOULD engage between 1/4 and 1/2 on a GOOD clutch, however i'd try and adjust the screw first, mine for example is maxed completely out (i need a clutch baaad) and it still engages roughly 1/2.

Your addressing this clutch as "cheap." Meaning the product is OEM aftermarket ? Or a cheap performance clutch ?

Sounds like you changed out the clutch for nothing.

When you had the trans off, did you make sure the throw out fork was not bent ?

My buddy had a problem where he bent his throw out fork to the point where it slightly cracked.
This dilemma gave him a late engagement symptom as well, but like RON said .. adjust it and see what
happens.

Bleed your hydro system. I had it happen to me once when swapping and engine. The clutch went to the floor, and only disengaged at the end. Bleeding it fixed the problem.

id try bleeding first then adjust it.. if that doesnt work buy a well known brand clutch or like stated before check amd make sure your trans is ok to begin with

my 98 civic starts engaging in the top 3rd of the pedal travel, it dosnt realy do anything untill the top 1/4 though. iv been told its normal for these cars. so yours should be fine if its like mine.

i can even push the clutch half way in and shift fine not that i should be doing that its a bad habbit.
