Default Clutch feels "gritty" when pushed in..95' EX

Sedan variant. 190k.

Also feels "gritty" when releasing, happens in the last 90% of pedal travel.

Anything I can lube first? Next step maybe bleed it?

I would prefer to try lubrication first, as it would be easier. I just need to know what spots to hit, either inside by the pedal or outside by the motor.

Thanks in advance!

Any noise? Almost sounds throwout bearing related.

@94, Ive heard this may be the problem also, but am hoping not, seems like a lot of work! Not really any noise in particular when this happens either. I just thought another cause could be air in the lines.

@gs, Thanks for the suggestion! Its not a squeak by any means, just feels odd. Gritty/rough is the best I can describe.

Ron, it may be. I just bought the car last week. The clutch grips great, no grindss or slips. If I can drive it this way without causing damage I'm ok with it.

My guess is the same as 94EG8 - throw out bearing. It could also be the clutch fork or even a transmission bearing. Nevertheless, I think you can continue to drive it, but if you start to hear noises, post again and provide details.

In the meantime, start preparing yourself to drop the transmission and replace replace the clutch flywheel, and throw out bearing. You're going to need to do this work soon anyway.

Is the throw out bearing part of the transmission? Because this feels like its part of the clutch pedal strictly. Does really feel like its transmission related. But I dont know jack haha.

Oh, and it feels the same with the engine off, if that helps...

Thanks guys!

No, it's part of the clutch, but you have to drop the transmission to get at it. Honda throwout bearings don't go bad very often, but that's what this sounds like. The throwout bearing only turns when you begin to depress the clutch pedal, other than that it just sits there and does nothing.

That concerns me a bit in that the throwout bearing isn't turning with the engine off. It could be not sliding freely on the tube it rides on though.

Or possibly a clutch fork problem?

Possibly... It might be dry on the pivot point or where the bearing slides on the end of it, but there's no way to check or to fix it without dropping the trans.

This saddens me. Im the type of guy that has only ever done really basic things (spark plugs, air filter etc.).

If push came to shove, and it becomes a big issue...maybe Ill have to man up and just do it. I have a Hanes manual haha.

I watched a few Youtube videos of bad throw out bearings. Nothing really came close to what im experiencing/hearing. Tomorrow ill give it a really close look/listen and see what I can come up with.

Thanks guys!

Get the Civic service manual (Helms) if you decide to do the work yourself.
