Default Is it the clutch?

Ok as some of you may know i got a b17a1 engine slowly being prepped to swap in over thanksgiving break....

Now when I bought the engine it ran fine but the clutch would not go into gear,

Is there a way to tell if the clutch is bad? Or is this a dead givewaway of a dead clutch?

Like if my mechanic took it apart could he say for sure if the clutch is good/bad?

a bad clutch would just slip. did you put the troughout bearing in right and check the pressure plate to be sure everything is to spec. also did you tighten the pressure plate to the touque spec (I think 19lbs?) Is the clutch pedal firm

ahh gowd i wish i knew the answers to all these questions...

the engine isnt in a car, it is slated to be put in my car over turkey break..

All i know is the guy i bought it from said that it wouldnt go into gear, he wasnt sure if it was a tranny or clutch problem

I am just trying to figure out if i need to shell out $$ for a new clutch, since i think this already has a stage 1 with flywheel but i dunno if its good to run with or not

Since the motor isn't even in the car.. why not just pull the tranny off and take a look at the clutch, flywheel, and throwout bearing.

Or, make sure that his problem wasn't a bent/broken fork.

well we are gonna but im only going to have a week to get the engine in and workin before i need to drive it back up to NY.

If the clutch is fine then there is no problem, well take it apart, look at it and everything is good. But if the clutch is bad then we have to worry about buying/ordering/recieving installing a clutch and i dunno if we'll have time in the week for that

If you have the cash, I'd suggest putting in a new clutch/bearings regardless. It's a lot easier w/ everything out of the car.

I would definatley change the clutch while you have the engine out. You should get a new throughout bearing and pilot bearing (I did with my exedy clutch) change both of these and while you are in there check the shift fork to be sure that it is not bent also check the slave cyl. These are the only things that I think it could be short of serious tranny problems

oh yeah can you shift the tranny just by hand moving the lever?? If so I would almost say that it has to be pressure plate, bearing, shift fork related

since the tranny is not in the car that would mean that there isn't any fluid. The only thing I can think of is if there is fluid in the tranny. But again you would have to check this when it's in the car.
