cluster or vss
 

how can I test my vss or speedo I have a dx cluster and teh speedo goes all the way around to the stopper but on the wrong side. Sometimes it comes on but it works backwards intermitantly :spellcheck: I'll be going along and then all of a sudden it will come on and as i accellerate it will go from past max speed to 80 - 100 or around that range. when i slow down the guage speeds up and when i speed up the guage goes down. I changed out my cluster for a ex one and when i got the new one before i installed it the needle was already past max speed. Now that i have it hooked up nothing happens w. the speedo which would happen sometimes with my old one. But is there a way to test if the new cluster is working or if its the vss. gimme some input guys

can anyone at least point me towards thing to test I can get a volt meter from work if that helps

Im having problems as well. My speedo won't register at all, thus no vtec and it sucks. Does anyone know where this dam mysterious fuse is? I hear people talk about this alternator/vss fuse i can't find it either?? https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emsad.gif

This is a good one.

Check that the Speedometer ring inside the trans hasn't seperated from the Differential Carrier assembly.

It happens all the time.

Put car in park and Neutral.
Remove VSS.
Stick your finger in the hole the VSS just came out of.
Touch the VSS ring gear on the differential.
If it spins at all it has unseated from the Differential Carrier Assembly and spins while you are driving.
This is why TRUST8383 has no VTEC.
The ECU uses the VSS to determine the speed of the car.
No speed registering no VTEC.

It's not likely to be the ALT fuse.
But just for reference it's under the dash.
Labled ALT or something like that.
If it was the ALT fuse you should be getting Electronic Load Detector MIL.

Thanks for the advice man...I will definitely check that. VSS is hooked up properly and the rest of the cluster works, i guess the next logical step would be inside the tranny. If the VSS ring gear does spin freely, i take it I'll have to drop the entire tranny and reconnect it? how hard is this and what exactly holds it? a pin or ring?
what a PITA. good excuse to put a quaife in now though! hehe

Don't know if this will solve any of your problems. But i grabbed a "new" harness from the junkyard for my VSS and wired it up, and the biotch works now, haha... I was pretty dam happy https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif The old plug harness was all corroded with gunk on it, so i cleaned it and it looked fine, but still didn't work. Couldn't find a gsr in the junkyard (doubted i would) , so I took a plug from a manual D-series tranny. Perfect fit. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif
