Default Cluster Replacement, 2000 Civic LX

Hey y'all!

I recently had some work done on my 2000 Civic LX in an attempt to get my temp gauge working again. Replaced both of the sensors and the thermometer is still dead, so it must be the cluster. Something I don't particularly want to tackle. So, I took it to two different shops, and both places quoted me around $500. How could this be? The cluster itself can be had for cheap, so is it just really labor intensive? I did browse before posting and saw a few tutorials, but am wondering what you all think is a fair shop price for this job.

Thanks fellas/ladies.

if the cluster checks out okay check the continuity of your sensor wiring, sensor to ecu/ sensor to cluster

Yes, 2 screws at the top of the bezel, then 5 on the cluster.. You have to kind of man handle the bezel a bit though, but be easy with it. I torqued mine a bit to clear the tripmeter reset button, but you may never know.

Excellent, thank you everyone.

So if I follow those guidelines that HondaPartsHero, I'll use my same odometer. If I were to do it differently and not keep my same odo, how would I get it "legitimized" so to speak? I'm worried that if I screw with the odo I will be committing accidental fraud.
