Default cluster question

so i got a 96 dx had a d16y7 and a custer without a tach. bought a b16a and a after market tach top speed was 123mph. 1 and 2nd would only tach 7600 but third through fifth would tach 8200. figured i had a cheap tach so i bought a 97 ex cluster with a factory tach now it is topping out at 125 and every gear goes to 9000 roughly because it will bury 8500 and keep going into the unregistered portion of the tach. what is up is it taching 8200 or 9000?

They say the best way to get an accurate reading is to hook up the wiring to the dizzy, at least for aftermarket tachs though. Not sure about stock tachs, do you have a chipped ECU?
