Default Clock ring removal making me crazy

I am trying to replace the clock ring (spiral reel according to local dealer) on my sons 95 Civic DX. Removing the air bag and steering wheel was no problem. I cannot figure out how to remove the plastic steering column cover without breaking it. I removed the three little screws and found one clip on the inside rear driver side) I don't see how the pass side and the front come apart. Being 60+ my vision isn't great but I have looked it over many times. Any help from someone that has done this job would be greatly appreciated.

this thread is a different issue but the the pic, post by "RonJ@HT" should help solve your problem, or at least give you the diagram I think you need to find all the clips, screws, etc.

Good luck

It's annoying. There are clips on the inside which are unforgiving if you unhook them in the wrong way. However, believe it or not, I have had reasonable success by holding the top section and whacking the bottom part with my hand so they separate. Start with the flat parts on either side of the column, behind the combination switches (lights, wipers).

Thanks for the link and the advice. It is nice to know that the folks that say it will come apart after removing the three little screws have obviously never done this job. In the last year I have installed a timing belt kit, clutch kit, radiator, ac/compressor plus the related parts and a heater valve. That little plastic cover is by far a bigger pain in the *** than any of those other jobs. Thanks again.

Weird, I just yanked mine apart and popped it back together when I was done on my wife's '93 3 door civic.

Didn't know I had to be careful so I just yanked really hard until it parted and repeated on the other side.

Snapped back together okay so don't think I broke it. Now I'm gonna have to inspect it and see if I messed it up some.

There's a good chance you did. Not a huge deal, really. But, having broken many clips in the past, and since I've navigated my way around many many junkyard cars, I've finessed this method such that I can do it fairly harmlessly now.

Weird. I've done this a ton of times and it has just pulled apart and snapped together with every one I've done. I had to use a little force, but I've never broken one at all.

I mean it literally just pulls apart with a little prying in the right spots...

I've pulled this ^ one apart about 3 times, never broke a single clip/snap.
