4) cover the dizzy end of the plugs and number them
5) spray degreaser on i use the whole can
6) wait 10-15 mins
7) spray with a high pressure washer (hopefully u r at the car wash)
8) repeat if needed
9) then attach anything unplugged ( i disconnect the dizzy plugs)
10) rmove the bags and start it up

Re: Cleaning engine bay and engine??? (SikCivic)
here's what i did last time.
i covered the distributor, both harnesses by my strut towers and my cam gear(i dont have an upper timing cover on). sprayed a fairly good amount of concentrated simple green on the warm engine and let it sit for 3 min or so. then i took the sprayer and used the lowest pressure i could get( i did this at the car wash) to gently hose down the engine bay for a min or 2. then i took the cover off the dizzy and whatnot, closed the hood and drove home. it steams a little, but what do u expect when u spray cold water on a 200 degree engine . here is a pic of the day after. keep in mind that my motor was in pieces and didnt run for a month and a half before this pic, so it had oil/grease/coolant all over. enjoy

Re: Cleaning engine bay and engine??? (Phatch99)
what if you didnt have an engine in the bay to worry about - if you just did a swap and are going to repaint and you can get water/degreasers pretty much anywhere.
I have seen some people use powerwashers on their bays...is there anything else that is recommended and easiest to do to clean it all up?
thanks HT

I took out my entire motor to clean my engine cavity.
Also if you use degreaser make sure you rinse it off good because degreaser will destroy your paint finish.

Re: Cleaning engine bay and engine??? (mp7235)
my bay is an extra pain in the *** though because I bought it in the mid-west before moving to AZ. It has all the rust-proof coating on some of the bay parts- a total pain in the *** to remove off - I was using this nasty adhesive remover on it...

You can do it while it's warm? I haven't cleaned my engine bay in a long time, because I don't have a wash near me, and I don't want to drive to the place and do it when it's warm... Any thoughts?

Re: Cleaning engine bay and engine??? (Sc2_Dan)
Yeah, I always use simple green or castrol super clean, but I'm worried about driving to a car wash and spraying it while the engine is warm. Does anyone do this, any probs with it?
I used to have a place around the corner, now where I live, it's like a 10 - 15 minute drive to a pressure washer.

cover what needs to be covered (filters.. ext)you should use GUNK degreaser when the engine is cold. then let it sit for 15 minutes. Spray it off with water. and drive around for 30 mintes to dry it out.
I use the Armor-all spray or tire cleaner spray to makes it sparkle

gunk engine degreaser. follow the direction on the can
1) cover intake filter with plastic bag ( duck tape all these shut)
2) cover the distributor
3) cover the alarm horn (it sounds gay if water gets in it)
4) cover the dizzy end of the plugs and number them
5) spray degreaser on i use the whole can
6) wait 10-15 mins
7) spray with a high pressure washer (hopefully u r at the car wash)
8) repeat if needed
9) then attach anything unplugged ( i disconnect the dizzy plugs)
10) rmove the bags and start it up</TD></TR></TABLE>
This is how I do it too. Gunk engine degreaser works wonder. Spray it and all the dirty crap(oil/debres) will come off easily. Little to no wait time.

Re: Cleaning engine bay and engine??? (SimpleFunction)
Go to a do it yourself car wash. Cover the dizzy, battery, and plug wires on the valve cover. One time I didn't and simple green got inside, it sucked. After you have all that covered, feel free to use "carb cleaner" on all of the metal, it really does a good job, then spay on some simple green, let it sit a few minutes, and then spay off and be carefull.
