Default Clean or Lube Stater Motor Gear when replacing?

I'm replacing my starter with a used working starter, but when I took it off the donor car I noticed that the gear which goes into the trans/flywheel is dirty/rusty. Is it standard to clean or lube this gear or should I leave it alone? If so, what product is recommended to clean and or lube the gear?

Thanks!

clean maybe, but I wouldn't out any grease on it.... you don't want it to get on the clutch \flywheel
