Civic VX dies when in gear
The other day as I was driving back from work, my car hesitated and jerked violently while on the highway. It's the feeling where you are almost out of fuel but in my case I still had a half tank of fuel remaining. Well to make things short, it started to die and I had to pull to the side of the road as it went. It starts up and stays running at idle but when I put it in gear and try to drive it, it immediately dies afterward.
It's a bone stock D15Z1 with 241,5xx miles on it, and I just replaced the fuel filter this morning to see if it was the issue. That one had 106k miles on it so I figured it was a clogged fuel filter giving me the issue, plus it was long overdue so why not? Start it up, try to drive it, same problem.
Does this sound like a fuel pump issue? Main relay? I'm kind of stumped.

Mine was doing that and it was the fuel pump. It would run fine at idle but as soon as i give it gas it would drop, if you have a fuel pressure gauge it should be pretty easy to see if thats whats causing it.

Gotcha, so is a 190lph Walbro fuel pump excessive for the D15z1? It's much cheaper than OEM and lots of people use it so I'm leaning heavily towards it. What do you guys think?

Thats close to what mine runs with a new pump on it. Mine was sporadic tho so even with the bad pump it would sometime still have that much pressure.

Yeah it stays the same for a little while than it slowly drops, a little faster to drop when its cold. I'm willing to bet you that the fuel pump should be the culprit. Unless you have trash or rust in your tank, or the strainer bag is clogged. It won't take long to swap the pump, the hardest part for me was getting the stupid clamps off the tube connected to the pump.

Re: Civic VX dies when in gear
I checked out the plugs last weekend and they were pretty foul, so I replaced the plugs with new NTK ones and the wires too, and the car ran much better.
Until earlier tonight, when the same symptoms erupted. This time, a CEL light came on so I jumped the port to see what the code was. Turned out to be a 48, for LAF sensor. I figured it was time since the last time I replaced it was nearly 5 years with a used one that had 50k on it. I had a feeling it may have been either that or a broken motor mount since I felt a bit of jerking and what felt like fuel cutting in and out at 4th and 5th gear, before it shut off while driving on the highway. Scary stuff.

EGR does weird things to any car, would probably be worth the time to clean the EGR system as well with as many miles on it as there are.
