Civic Vtec swap to different Vtec Question
Ok i have to swap out a 95 EX Civic Vtec 1.6 to another Civic 1.6 with the black valve cover. The junkyard says i dont need any modifications, so i swapped them and the new engine doesnt fire the injectors. It gets fuel to the lines but no injector fire. It does have spark.
Both the motors had the same engine code but different valve covers. The one i took out had a silver one w/ Vtec on it, and the new one had a black one. The junkyards say they are the same motor and other places say i need to swap computers. WHO REALLY KNOWS? please help

swap computers and make sure that your injectors are getting power with a test light or volt meter that will solve your problem but you may want to try swapping computers

Shouldn't need to swap computers if they are both D16Z6's. Try swapping the distributor off your old motor on the new one and see what happens.

My first guess would be the ignitor so swapping in a known good distributor could eliminate a few ideas. Also check all your grounds including the ones on the thermostat housing

I swapped the distributor with the original one and it does the same thing. I put a test light on the wires going to the Injectors and cranked it. The test light did not light up or pulse.
The grounds are all there
I dont wanna take it to the Dealership cause they screw us everytime
Any others suggestions nsxmatt

i don't know the real problem but here's some ideas...
pre 92 injectors are a different style than the 92 and newer..the older ones need an injector resister box. if both motors you have are d16z6 or d16y8 (sohc vtec) then this shouldn't matter.
another idea is to use the original wiring harness from the old motor, UNLESS the old motor was doing the same thing..then it's possible you have a wiring problem.
like matt said, switch computers, check grounds, and double check wiring connectors. good luck.

Re: Civic Vtech swap to different Vtech Question (slowstang101)
the motor you have is probably from a 88-91 civic and the electronics/ecu you have is for a 92-95 d16z6 obd1. swap computers and get the wiring harness converter and you'll be golden.

Re: Civic Vtech swap to different Vtech Question (dogfood)
The dealership may "screw" you, but at least they will get it running.
Have you tried swapping the wire harness, injectors, etc. from the original engine? Are you sure it is the injectors? Have you checked to see if you are getting spark?

No it isn't. If you had read his post, he said both of the blocks had the same code, which in this case is D16Z6 - so they are both the same engine.
As for the difference in valve covers, the '92-93 D16Z6 valve cover had a black-wrinkle finish and the Honda logo on it, while the '94-95 D16Z6 valve cover was unpainted and said "VTEC" on it along with the Honda logo.

Re: Civic Vtech swap to different Vtech Question (Targa250R)
The engine codes are the same as stated 3 or 4 times. This engine came out of a 93 Civic EX, so its the same thing. Im tired of this crap and dont wanna change wiring harnests because they are the same engine. I guess i need to try computers.

Re: Civic Vtec swap to different Vtec Question (slowstang101)
The reason for swapping out the ECU, harness, etc is not because they are different. You do that so that you can troubleshoot what the problem is. Say you swap ECUs and it works, yours was faulty. Get it? Good luck.

Re: Civic Vtec swap to different Vtec Question (19civic93)
we sold the car and 10k miles later it threw a rod. Then the low lifes gave us the car back. Since the original motor was found only in EX civics it was a hard motor to find. BUt the junkyards say this one will work. Obviously its not a simple swap
I guess i will start swapping parts, but i dont think that will solve the problem

Actually, that '92-95 1.6L engine came in:
'92-95 Civic EX, sedan
'93-95 Civic EX, coupe
'92-95 Civic Si, hatchback
'93-95 del Sol Si, targa-top coupe
It should have been a direct bolt-in swap. I have no idea why it is not starting.
Why did you take back the car?
