Default Civic stays in Reverse no matter if in park or drive

I've got a 96 Civic with a d16y8 and Automatic setup.
The odd thing is that it won't go into Drive. It can stay in Park and you can hit the gas and it will go backwards. You can put it in reverse and it will obviously go in reverse.. You can put it in Drive and it will go in reverse. No matter if you use D 1 or 2.. etc.. I can fool around and find Neutral, but I'm hoping this is something stupid like a linkage or something, but its stumped me at what to look at first because every bad tranny I've worked on when reverse is out it won't go in reverse and when drive is out, it doesn't drive forward.. This thing stays in reverse.

The check engine light is on and the following Errors pop up on my ODB2 reader..

P1768 - Automatic Transaxle Concerns
P0700 - Transmission Control System Malfunction

Anyhow, just looking at where I might need to start. Or if anyone has seen something like this before?

thanks,
Justin

DTC P0700 is generated by any detected transmission fault. So any automatic transmission problem is going to throw a P0700 and another code.

The P0715 does indicate a malfunction in the LS. Honda outlines a specific procedure to flush the transmission. I included it here and I would also recommend using the Honda ATF, P/N 08206-9001.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
2. Drain the transmission. Refill it with Genuine Honda ATF.
3. Start the engine.
4. With your foot on the brake pedal, shift the transmission to D4.
5. Release the brake pedal. Press on the accelerator, and bring the speedometer up to 50 mph. Make sure the transmission shifts through the first three lower gears and into fourth, and that the torque converter locks up.
6. Apply the brakes to stop the front wheels.
7. Shift to reverse, and then to neutral.
8. Repeat the shifting procedure (steps 4 through 7) four more times.
9. Turn off the engine.
10. Repeat the above drain, refill, and shifting procedure (steps 2 through 9) two more times.
11. Drain the transmission. Reinstall the drain bolt with a new washer. Refill the transmission with Genuine Honda ATF.

12. Disconnect the linear solenoid electrical connector. Remove the mounting bolts, then remove the linear solenoid.
13. Inspect the linear solenoid mounting surface on the transmission. Remove any contamination.
14. Install the new linear solenoid. Reconnect the electrical connector.
15. Use the PGM Tester to erase any DTCs in the powertrain control module (PCM).

*Isn't my write up.

======================

p0700 is a sub code indicating that there is a code in the trans side of the pcm. Like the p0740.

P740 is a lockup torque converter code. If the trans is a new reman unit than double check all the connetors and make sure they are plugged in. If its a junkyard trans than its possible that you need another trans. Most of those codes arent caused by any soleniods but rather an internal problem.

well you said you have to mess with it to get it into neutral? I was giong to say it was the linkage until I found that its throwing a code. Not sure what the trans-axle concerns mean though.
