Default Civic makes a rattle can noise..

I recently went back stock on my 97 Civic hatch and I put in a bone stock d16y8. I also replaced the exhaust system with a bone stock one from a 97 Civic Hatch CX. But now it makes a "rattle can" noise at around 3krpms every time and its sound so nasty.

I am currently using the d16y8 headers which has no cat converter and the stock civic exhaust system from a 97 Civic hatch Cx has no cat on the piping. Could the "no cat" be the reason why its making a rattling noise? Or could it just be a loose exhaust?

Yes I do plan on putting a cat in the future but I have no funds at the moment.

Exhaust pipe A for the 97 hatch has top and bottom heat shields that you also should check.

Thanks I will check all the heat shields. I never knew that a loose or cracked heatshield is the reason why some civics make a "Tin Can" sound... I use to think it was because of no cat or no resonator or bad donut gasket. Is that the case?

Its almost always the heat sheilds if you dont have a cat on it. Or the exhaust could be barley touching something on the undercarrage. Engine vibration, vehicle vibration from the road or just the harmonics of the exhaust can make them vibrate if something is loose.

if u are running no cat.... and running a stock exhaust system... you will have rattle can noise.... so the answer to ur problem is a missing cat....

i remember back in the day when a few people took out the headers from the y7 .. and ran the stock straight pipe with aftermarket headers and stock muffler... it makes a rattle can noise

Had the same problem. Those heat shields are annoying. One fell off on the highway and was sparking alot.

Are you guys sure about this? The older model civics like 92-95 never had a cat converter on them and they never sounded like a "thin can noise"... It was basically header to straight pipe exhaust with the resonator on it.

There is a CAT on the 92-95 Civics. I just replaced one. It was a skinny one similar to above picture.

Oh your right.. how stupid of me I forgot it just doesnt have a sensor on it.. So maybe it is the cat once I check my heat shields first. Be back tomorrow with updates

im not sure if the 92-95 have a cat but it should have it.

it is definately the case for EK's....considering alot of my friends made that rattle can noise on purpose by taking off the cat.....

the rattle could also come from those two heats shields, but ive never come across a case like that.

I believe it does but there's no sensor on it. I could be mistaken though but I remember my friends 93 Civic hatch having a cat on the header like the 96-00 Civic Cx, Dx models.

I also checked my piping yesterday for any loose heat shields and they were all secure and stiff as a board. It has to be the No Cat thats making the noise. its very annoying and nasty sounding. Im embarrased to drive so I try to shift earlier like around 2500rpms to avoid the rattle lol

Or you could have your local exhaust
shop add a resonator in...problem solved!

Its a stock oem piping so it already has a resonator on it.

is it a rattling noise coming from the front? like something is tapping against something.... mine does the same thing, pretty sure its because the stock exhaust manifold is cracked completely through on runner 4... you may want to take the heatshield off the stock header and make sure its not cracked..

I sorta had this same problem.. But my exhaust was an after market. I had the tin can noise around 3k rpm. When i went to find the source, turns out it was a resonator. (i think thats what its called) the inside had one of the metal rings that holds the comb outside of it loose.... So of course gutted it all out since i wanted to get rid of the noise. Sometime i will get another when funds are ok.

Im not sure its the front but it sounds like its coming out of my stock exhaust. I also inspected the header already for cracks but there's none. Btw its a stock ex header but I know the d16y7 headers usually crack on the runner. Yes I also removed the heatshield from the front but still makes noise. I think it is the "no cat" thats making that noise maybe. I will try and switch headers with my friends d16y7 which has a cat on it. I will let you guys know if the noise went away.

I think you might be talking about the under heat shields but the resonator is the middle part in the diagram. It looks bigger than the piping and its purpose is to lessen the exhaust noise I believe.

And adding another resonator (or a glass pack backward)
will further reduce the echo inside the piping traveling out the muff.

the y8 stock header is tubular like an aftermarket header so as far as it being a crack its quite unlikely from what i've seen
