I am new to Hondas so plz stay with me on this one...

I know the EX model has VTEC cuz my engine doesn't fully kick in until past 4000 but not as noticeable as the SI, Lude, etc.

If I added more power to the engine, would VTEC noticeability increase at all? It may sound like a retarded question but I'm not sure if VTEC can be somehow be made "more noticeable". Do SOHC engines differ from DOHC's? Or is it the cams and the ECU that make a difference as well as the VTEC silinoid?

i know for a fact it is easy to hear the crossover on a Y8 head
the Y8 head is on 96-00 civic EX the older ex was a Z6 head it was hard to hear on mine
you could get a short arm intake will help out in the sound dept. and give a LITTLE hp

Could you plz explain the diff b/t y7 head and y8 head? I've been reading up on some D16's and some are y7 and y8 and I have no clue what they mean about them. And how like you should get a new y8 timing belt, head gasket, etc....

Also, if I am not correct, is my 99 EX manual an SOHC D16Y7?

And could you give me some price ranges if I got a D16Y8 with the timing belt, etc?

?? Confusion overwhelming me....

VTEC is louder on DOHC motors because both the intake and exhaust valves change profiles, whereas with the SOHC motors only the intake valves change profile. Also the VTEC cam lobes on the DOHC tend to be more aggressive. You can make VTEC louder and more noticable on your SOHC by adding a short ram or cold air intake.

just about the only things that will make vtec more "noticeable" would be to get a decent short ram intake, aftermarket cam, and (although i dont recommend this people still do it anyway) you can change the vtec crossover point with a VAFC or vtec controller

the difference between SOHC and DOHC is that the DOHC motors have camshafts on both the intake and exhaust sides, whereas an SOHC has one only on the intake. the ECU, cams, and vtec solenoid differ quite a bit between SOHC and DOHC engines, meaning few (if any) are compatible between them.

adding power to an sohc vtec engine isnt going to do a whole lot for vtec itself, unless the parts affect it specifically.. but you will notice changes in your power band as you add more performance parts.

What about with the crossover?

If he did change the cams and added lets say an AEM cold air intake, will the VTEC have more of a "kick" when its triggered? In shorter words, can you feel the VTEC like you do in an S2000 (hypothetically...not saying feel it THAT much)

Yes. But FYI...feeling vtec "kick" means that the car is improperly tuned and is not making as much power as it could be.

I mean to hear VTEC really, it depends on what Intake you get, the size of the piping, and what bolt ons, cause I have a brother that has the d16y8 motor with a APC Intimatior Intake and I mean you can hear him a good bit aways, and he doesnt have exhaust either, and when Im riding in his Civic I can feel the VTEC kick in or rather sense it when it kicks in.

Yes, and yes. 96-00 EX are D16Y8 with VTEC; the LX and DX models were non-VTEC D16Y7. 99-00 SI are B16 DOHC VTEC. I don't know about the 'Ludes though.

I had a DC Sports short ram on my 98 EX. VTEC would scream. Thats the only thing I miss about that car.

yeah my brother has a APC temporay intake and I think its a Short Ram Intake and OMG that bitch screams like none other, that pipe on that bitch is big.

I think SRI's are better for Tq, instead of hp, but the thing about CAI they give u the hp, but I like the resornator from the factory airbox, u hear that deepness with it, and thats why I like short ram, cause with cold air you have to remove it
