First off, I apologize if this has been posted before. I did search prior to creating the thread and while I found numerous threads about the taillight gasket I couldn't find an answer to the question I am going to ask.

That being said, is it absolutely necessary to use sealant on the gasket facing the chassis? If so, is it also necessary to apply some sealant on the gasket facing the tail light as well? I replaced my tail light gasket since I was having water leak into the spare tire well and wanted to eliminate that.
