Civic CX with a SOHC Vtec swap...
my friend has a Civic CX with a D16Z6 out of a Civic EX. His CX is a 94 and the motor is out of a 96. He used the EX ECU. I was wondering how to get the VTEC working? We ran the ground and signal to the vtec solenoid and the ground the the vtec oil pressure and still nothing. Am I missing something?

Are you usuing the ECU that came with the motor (OBD-II), or a P28? The pinouts are different for the two, just wanna make sure you have the right connections.

I'm confused. You say that he is using a d16z6 from a 96 ex. To my knowledge, the only EX motor that came in the 96+ civics is the d16y8.
Which ecu is he using? Is the the OBD II or the OBD I ex ecu? If it's the OBD II ecu, it's probably looking for a fiew things that your harness doesn't have. Certain things like a 2ndary O2 sensor, and your crank fluxation sensor.
Find an OBD 1 ex ecu. One that is not an automatic ecu. That should fix some problems.
Also, try and pull the codes..see what's up.
there is a little plug above the ecu, put a paper clip or a wire in both holes, read how many times the cel blinks..

My friend is doing the same swap, are you using the P28 ECU? Also, how much of the wiring plugs up? Any problems using the OBD2 dist.?

You have to rewire the dist if you're putting a 96+ motor into an OBD 1 car.
That is, if you are using the stock 92-95 harness (I don't think there is anything else you can use)

the crank sensor is on the timing side on obd2 and in the distributor on obd1 cars

That's probably the easiest thing to do. But, if you're good with electrical, you can do it. My friend took a 2000 GSR distributor and wired it up to work in his OBD 1 Civic.
I guess the biggest problem would be the ecu. Just get an ecu that doesn't look for that kind of thing. Basically any OBD 1 ecu.
