??? Civic backfiring & stalling. speedometer going crazy.
93 Civic DX with 213,000 mi.
So last week my car began acting really strange. After driving for about 10 minutes or so, the speedometer began flopping around, then suddenly the car began to backfire and bog down. It eventually stalled when i came to a stop.
after 15-20 minutes i could start it again, and go a few more miles, then it happended again. I replaced the distributor, rotor, cap, plugs, oxygen sensor, before giving up and taking to a shop. They told me it was a bad ECU, but they wanted to get it from the dealer for $750, so i took it home and bought one myself.
this did no good. The problem still exists. Also directly after the car stalls and i try to start it, the engine light is not on, and i do not hear the pgm-fi relay clicking, but when i turn it over, the warning light will come on but it is very dim. I am wondering if it might be the relay itself.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm getting tired of replacing parts for no reason....

i'm not sure of the problem, but it may be the ground on the motor. try cleaning/replacing the ground wires.
hmmm ECU for $750 that's crazy. that's like a new d-series motor!!! 213k miles sounds like it is starting to break down, maybe time for a swap? stop wasting money on parts that might still be good on your motor, those $$$ will add up for a new swap.

well, i replaced the ignitor when i replaced the distributor, that was one of my first thoughts when it started heppening. i thought at first it was something mechanical, but because the speedometer is going crazy at the same time, I am thinking more and more that it might be a ground somewhere. could the alternator be surging or something? there is corrosion aorund the battery, but i get a good reading of 12.5v off it consistantly when not running.

my only suggestion is that your car has probably become possessed. This usually only happens to cars when they are between 180,000 miles and 220,000 miles. You need to have a religious ceremony and somehow solve this problem. maybe a sacrifice of some sort might fix it. like..... step on an ant or something. dont try to get a swap because your car will still be possessed and the engine will never fire. just a tip.

Try taking the exhaust manafold cover off and check for cracks in the manafold. I had the same problem and ended up having to replace my manafold because of a large crack.

have a local shop test the battery and alternator when the car is running and you will know if the battery or alternator is going bad.

yeah I have to agree with that one, a lose or bad ground will make all those things happen, check the one on the tranz and it don't hurt to add more, to the eng to the chaise good luck

Two days a my coworker's car started acting the exact same way (Jeep Cherokee, but still same symptoms). IT was an alternator. New alternator and not exorcism was necessary. Bad grounds sound plausible too.
Good luck!

well, don't i feel stupid.
i cleaned all the ground wires that i could find, tested the connections
and took the car out for about 25 minutes......i encountered no problems.
i suppose the true test will be the ride to work tomorrow.
If its going to fail, it will do it when i need it not to most.
thanks for all of the advice.
