Civic: Acceleration Rattle When Cold
1998 Civic Sedan with 80 Km. Dealer wants to replace engine because there is excessive wear on piston bore. The engine will be supplied at no charge although the warranty expired. However, labour is extra at $1400. The acceleration pinging goes away when the engine is warming up.
Is the replacement necessary?

are you using shitty gas? you might be detonating. id run that thing till it blew if you have a spare motor. and do not pay a dealer to install it. im sure someone will do it in your are for about 500-700.

yeap, dealers suck
only thing is, he is getting the engine for free from the dealer, so i think they HAVE to install it.

Re: Civic: Acceleration Rattle When Cold (Campee)
It's coming from the engine. The Honda dealer mechanic says that there is too much wear with the cylinder walls hence the excessive rattle from the pistons.

Unless the dealer has a scope to get inside the cylinders (though the spark plug hole) I dont see how they can say excessive wear. Most likely Id just say its probably the valves. I know mine rattle if I get close to 4k when its cold. Like really cold. But then I dont know what kind of sound its making either.

The dealer is Parkway Honda. In the past they have been alright. Now I wonder if it has to do with their renovations to their service area. Hmmm.

Re: Civic: Acceleration Rattle When Cold (wlem)
Here was the resolution to my problem.
After a lengthy discussion with Honda Canada, they decided to cover the cost of the short block replacement and the labour.
Should I treat this engine as new and observe the break-in parameters? Are there other items to watch for, like the AC?
Thank you for your comments and encouragement.

IF the engine is new, then yes... and even if it wasnt, id say yes... lol, just for a few days to check... but make sure it is new and take it easy as any new motor, frequent oil changes etc...

Re: Civic: Acceleration Rattle When Cold (CooBlueDAB)
According to Honda, the engine is a remanufactured engine. So, it is not a brand new engine since the model year is over, 1998.
