Choice of oil?
I have a 92 civic hatchback with b16 turbo setup. I currently use Mobile 1 synthetic 10w-30. I was thinking of switching to one of two choices. One being Ames-oil Turbo synthetic oil 10w-30, two being Royal Purple 10w-30. Anyone use any of these? Anyone know anything about the ames turbo oil? I saw a car actually gain almost 9 hp to the wheels with Royal Purple fluids! Anyone have any suggestions as to what kind of filter I should use? I usually use Oem Honda ones cause I like Oem stuff. Someone told me the are made by Fram and I didn't believe them. . .Holla!

i honestly believe that 5-30 is way to light for a turbo car.. **** i run 15w50 in my car and its na.. all the thicker oil does is slow u down a little.. but i dont notice it... and i think the thicker oil would be better for the turbo anyway...
i was thinking of using rotella t for mine when i go turbo.. it says its for diesel and gasoline engines... plus its all specially formluated for turbo engines

for all of my F/I cars in the past i've run 20w50 - THEY GET SO HOT! hehe
but yeah, 5w-30 or 10w-30 for N/A should be fine, and btw Royal Purple is the nectar of the Gods.

the thicker oil (but not super thick oil) protects better when driving hard. I use pennzoil 10w-40 in my car's, and havent had anything but good luck! I also change the oil every 2250 miles

i've been running royal purple in my swapped hatch since i got it over a year ago. i really like it, and a few of the experiments we've done here at school, royal purple was up in the upper ranks.
thicker oil protecting better when driving hard is a myth. if you go thicker than factory recommended, then the oil will have trouble going through some of the oil passages. will still move, just not at the same rate, so actually will run with less oil protection.

aaa i wish i had my chart lying around.... runs outside to grab his manual. In the CRX manual there is a chart that displays a whole bunch of diffrent weights of oil and when they are appropriate for use. It is based on ambient temp of the surrounding atmosphere plus engine temp (engine temp + outside temp). So if the engine is running at higher temperatures (at the track redling the engine) then normal driving (highway/city driving shifting at 3-4k) then using a thicker oil then the manufactur recommends is good. You want to use an oil that is suitable for your driving conditions. Your grandma is going to want to use a 5w or 10w 30 because her engine isnt running at super high temps, while you might want to use a 20w 40 or a 20w 50 because your engine is running at a higher tempature. The hotter your engine runs the more chance of engine burn off you have. Thicker oil can also help prevent oil burnoff. Now in the middle of the winter with a outside tempature of 0 degrees fahrenheight your car probally wont even turn on with a 20w50 oil in there because when it is cold the oil will be to thick to circulate. So bottom line is if you race your car or drive your car very hard you are going to want to use a thicker oil then factory recommended. I use mobil 1 10w30 on my d16y8 on boost, works great! It's going to mainly depend on climate and what's done to the car, I think with a boosted honda motor 10w30 and full synthetic is a great choice because 5w30 is too too thin.
