ok. ive been hearing alot about ECUs being chipped or unchipped.

what does that mean?
and whats the difference?
like does the unchipped ECU give more hp or what?

"Chip" has become a catch word meaning the ECU is set to run on an external EEPROM instead of the internal maps in the ECU.

An unchipped ECU, for the engine it's designed for, will be better if you have simple mods. (header, intake, etc)
If you have major mods (cams, bumped compression, porting, etc) Tuning it needed to make the car run correctly, to do so you need to chip it and adjust the maps using a wideband and if possible a dyno.

Too many people think buying a chipped ECU with a "tuned" chip will make more power, 99% of the time they drop power.

To the OP a chipped ECU can also refer to an ECU that uses eeprom programed for a different engine than the ECU was originally designed for, commonly you will see P28 ECUs reprogrammed to run B16s and B18Cs

and how do you "chip" the ECU. cuz im thinking of getting a turbo.

also how do you "tune" a car? cuz i heard after getting turbo you should tune the car

EEPROM is in reference to the chip its self. when you chip a computer (as relic said) your making it read a new ROM (Read Only Maps) Externally.

EEPROM (Erasable Electronic Programmable Read Only Maps)
EPROM is the same however you cannot erase the info after its been put onto the chip.

Chipping an ECU just means your making a spot for a chip (socketing) and telling the computer to now use its external ROM as opposed to its internal ROM

Always tune after a turbo bye editing software to make parameter changes to your ROM on your EEPROM chip. search for more info.

With a program called "crome" or "neptune" that you can download (freeware) onto your laptop (or any computer). Then you can use a chip burner (think of it as a CD-Writer) to burn the .bin file (.bin files hardware images - in this case images of Honda ECU chips...images are a file containing all the data of some storage device (such as a CD, hard drive, or data chip) that contains the data stored on that hardware) to the chip.

Feel free to PM me if that doesn't make much sense.

Once the data is actually written to the chip you can just pop it into the socket (since you already soldered the socket into the ECU's mainboard) and it'll use the data you provided for its ignition, fuel tables, which sensors to ignore, speed governor removal, 2 step, rev limiter, etc.
