Default Checking LMA's on b16a2

Can you check for a failing lost mation assembly without removing the cams? Sorry for the noob question. (if you can, would someone post the procedure please) Thank you.

i am 98% sure camshaft removal is nessisary

I have a knocking souns even after doing the valve adjustment. So to find which of the assemblies is making noise I will have to remove the cams? I heard something about pushing the cam lobes (but thats all I know).
