Default CHECK LIGHT on 96 EK

Hello Everyone,

Just recently my check light have gone on and off frequently and I am not sure what it is. When it first started a couple of days ago, I pop up my hood and saw and o2 sensore was off of the intake box. So I just poped back on. It seems to go away and now it's back on again.

What can I do to check to see what the problem really is..

96 Hatchback with 154,000 woohooo. Help me bring this baby to 200k.

you'll only be able to check it when the light is on. next time the light is on, you can go to autozone and they will give you the code.

1. Pull those codes. Don't jump to conclusions on the basis of them though, but they're still a valuable preliminary that'll point you in more or less the right direction.

2. Erase the codes. Normally, this is done by yanking the ECM fuse for 10 seconds or so.

3. Start 'er up. Note any unhealthy sounds, rough idle, etc.

4. Go for a test drive. Zero in on any driveability problems.

5. Pop the hood and look for any obvious problems, such as disconnected vacuum lines, broken or grounded wires, a leaking coolant temperature sensor, etc.

6. Look at the basics... The vacuum line, wires, and connections have to be in good shape.

no you don't

On the passenger side of your car, under the dash beneath the glove box, you will find a green cover above the kickpanel that houses a blue connector that has two wires.

That you need to do is turn the ignition off, and using the piece of wire or paperclip, jump the blue connector so that you connect the two wires together. Basically stick one end of the paperclip or peice of wire into one prong on the connector and stick the other end of the paperclip or wire into the other prong.

Once you have done this, turn the key to the IGN position and watch your CEL light. It will illuminate in a series of flashes.

You will notice that there will be LONG flashes and SHORT flashes. All of the ECU trouble codes are two-digits. LONG flashes determine the TENS digit by the number of times it flashes, and SHORT flashes determine the ONES digit by the number of times it flashes.

Thanks you you Filthy_shovel for such in depth response, Imma print out this thread and go try it. Hope I don't fry anything.

Well if it ain't an O2 sensor, am not sure that it is then, but it's connected to my INtake box so I call it the O2 sensor. I think it's there to limit the air coming into the engine..

That's your IAT sensor--intake air temperature sensor. And yeah, next time the CEL comes on, do what was described above. This procedure became a routine occurrence for me when I was boosted (due to a faulty blue box). I even keep a pre-bent paperclip in my cointray now.

Where is my ECM fuse? does it have a different name? I did pull my backup fuse out and see that it's all burnt so I replace. but that did not get rid of the engine check light.

You can remove the negative terminal of your battery. That will also reset the computer. And if the CEL is still on, check the ******* thing. It's not there for an interior light show. Resetting the computer will not help you figure out why it came on in the first place.

How do I check the Freaking thing? Auto Zone won't read it because they say that the State of CA won't let them do anything with it. Should I got to the smog guy and just have them check it out?

It's not a "Green cover." It's a green rubber thing with a blue "plug" in it. Coming from the blue plug are two wires. It is practically impossible to miss because it stands out pretty well.

You have wiring issues with your Primary o2 sensor, located on the exhaust manifold (header)

Code 1 is either low or high circuit voltage
Code 41 is Sensor Heater Malfunction
