Default Check engine light flashed and now its on for good??

Ok on my way to work today i noticed my check engine light flash a few times like 5 then go away, then about 5-6 mins later it does it again and again goes away. So here i am wondering why its is flashing and then i notice seems my car is losing power sometimes.

I pulled over to the store checked oil and it was low (yes i know i have a oil leak and have to put a court in it about every 1200 miles or so). But anyways back to point after i leave store i head toward work 10 mins later my check engine light comes on and has stayed on since. I did notice on my way home from work while going up a hill it seemed to be stalled around 3k rpm's in 5th gear while i had it at least 80% floored??

I did notice i have very dirty air filter which i am going to clean or replace tomm. But after today i am afraid to drive car 10+ miles or so. Seems sometimes it is running decent then other like its powerless..

The car is a 99 civic si, with standard b16 Dohc Vtec.

Yes. It might be harder to actually find the plug than it is to pull codes.

Should just be push tabs. But I don't think you even have to take off your kick panel

Isn't a 99 an obd2, so wouldn't it be better to use a obd2 scanner

Haven't seen any one pull codes with a paper clip from an obd2 car. Obd2 scanner is to pull codes from obd2 car which you just plug in

Finding misfires is easy on these engines. It's even easier if you hook up a scan tool that can show live data and freeze frame data, which is available even in the cheap <$100 models.

Without a scan tool, start by pulling the spark plugs and checking the gap, color, and condition.

Just saying its easier to hook up a tool that will tell you what it is rather than doing the paper clip method, never said it wasnt possible. And to OP good luck with your car

Other codes aren't gonna magically pop up if you use a scan tool you'll get the same codes as paper clip method. A scan tool will be useful to diagnose the misfire as said above. But I doubt someone at AutoZone will do that for you, if they even knew how.

True, but they're so cheap now that there's no excuse not to have one, IF you plan to work on your own obd2 car. This one is $48 and I use it every day for quick checks when I don't feel like hooking up the Modis...

Well i took it to autozone and they pulled codes, came back random mis fire cly 1 and 3 and code for random misfire and code for something egm.

I bought some seafoam and plugs and plug wires came home changed them and reset the check engine light and took it for a drive and seems to pull great now and so far check engine light has not came back on... Hopefully it is fixed..
