Default check engine light??

ok so yesterday i get a check engine light on my 99 si,now when i turn it on the engine struggles for a second running at 400 rpms for like a second or two then jumps up to warm up, now when its warm it runs at 1100 rpms instead of 900 like it used to. it also smells almost like burning rad fluid but im not exactly sure smells almost like road kill.

1 thing i know i did but not sure if that could cause it is i accidentally spilled some steering lubricant on the belt by pulling out the hose by accident trying to get to the ugly mess of head light wires. Also i do need to replace the small hose on the rad next to th cap that had a cut in it so i cut a small peice on the end and put it back on but i guess there is a tiny tiny hole in it still but the leak isnt nearly as bad.

what could be the problem how do i check the check engine light code i searched but didnt really find how to do it?

You can go to autozone and ask them to run a free OBD2 scann on your car to tell you your problem, it could also be that you have a broken head gasket.
