Check engine light 1998 honda civic
Greetings all,
My 1998 Civic "D16aY engine" CEL won't turn off.
Recently replaced the o2 sensor (Bank 1)
also replaced the Knock sensor.
When I went to get smogg'd those where the only things that came up on the OBD when he scanned during the test.
Failed the 15MPH test aswell. He said that after these changes it SHOULD fix the smog.
The light won't turn off, and we all know in california this will not pass a legal smog.
I've tried leaving the battery unplugged for 30secs-a day, also drove it around over 40-70 miles. I lack the funds to repair anymore and I doubt that a mechanic shop will scan/clear codes free.
Any suggestions?

needs more then 30 seconds to reset try 10 or to be safe half an hour also can you try a different ECU/borrow a Scan tool ?

really ? try a different one or advance auto/another one I don't know all the part stores you guys have in the states. Code: 0 or the solid CEL would be the ECU at fault

Had similar issue on my 99, problem wasn't the o2 sensors. I took off the header cover and noticed it had a nice crack. Had to replace the header with the cat converter (civic dx has them together). After that no more CEL.

Like RonJ said, pull the codes - you're probably still throwing codes. There's a how-to in the FAQ's link at the top of this forum. After you've done that, disconnect your battery, then try to start the car. That will discharge any residual power in the system, clearing the codes.

Get yourself an ElmScan 5 ($25 free prime shipping):
^That will pull codes, reset ECU, read in TPS positions, etc etc etc. OBDII
*edit*
It plugs into your laptop.
ScanTool 423001 ElmScan 5 Compact OBD-II Scan Tool and OBDwiz Diagnostic Software : Amazon.com : Automotive

So I wen't to pepboys and got the codes red.
Still has o2 sensor and also Knock sensor, and developed speed sensor problems.
He cleared the codes and the o2/knock turn back on instantly (Also i replaced the speedsensor and now it works perfect) but the codes keep coming back after I clear them. He said there might be some electrical issues with the car... anyone have any ideas or have something similar happen?

Wrong. Your first error was assuming that the codes meant the sensors were bad. There are many other causes. If you want help, post the codes.

There was a knock sensor code, so I replaced the knock sensor. Two years later the code came back. I found the knock sensor wire was shorting or capacitating somehow, causing the OHM to slowly increase. I ran a new wire from the ECU strait to the sensor and the code went away.
