Default Check Engine Coming On And Off While Im Driving On My 94 Civc Ex

It comes on and the rpms drop and the car bogs a little but then it goes out and the car runs normal. At one point the car was parked idling and the light came on and there was smoke coming out of the exhaust then the light went off and it stopped. I cant check the code because the light doesn't stay on when the car is off. My motor is a D16Z6. Has anyone ever had this problem any leads to what it might be.

your ECU will still store the code, jump the connector and it will read you out the code it was coming on for

If the light flashes on and off, you have very high emissions that will destroy the catalytic converter, after it stops flashing, it will store a code, and seconds later, the MIL will stay on. This light indicates a very severe misfire. If it continues, it will never go solid.

Just because the MIL isn't on, doesn't mean there isn't a code. The ECU will do a double-take of what just happened, to determine if its an actual problem, or if it was a random anomaly. Jump the ECU and retrieve the code, with a heavy misfire like that there will be at least one 70-74 code in there.

I would start by looking at anything you have recently done to the car, and the condition of the maintainence items (plugs, rotor/cap mainly, check for corrosion as well).

was just driving and the light came on and off then on again i stopeed at a stop sign and the car cut off. The car would not start at first almost as if no gas or spark. Could this be a distributor problem?

Can distributors flicker on and off like this on any given cylinder???

It could be, or a connection to it, I've done quite a few writeups in this forum alone, id say 10 at least, so search around, I can't remember the names of them all.
