Default cheaper to replace motor or piston rings in a 95 civic DX

My car is smoking...a lot like a quart a week lol. My question is would it be cheaper to just replace the motor or replace the piston rings? The motor currently has 170k. Thank you for your help.

are you doing the work or are you having a shop do the work?

oem honda piston rings are about 40 bucks per piston
and since your dissembling the bottom end you'll need to replace the head gasket, the head studs, and the rod and main bearings thats about 300 in parts

plus fluids, gaskets, and misc stuff you'll run into, so another 100

your at about 560 and thats doin it yourself

you can find a good running single cam longblock for less then that and put it in your self

My old motor was doing the same in my '92 CX. I bought a used motor from a local shop for about $450, a buddy and myself put it in over a weekend. Unless you're very handy and know what you're doing when working with internals.. I would just replace the entire engine.

a while back i was asking myself this same question.. with a rebuild you spend more money but have peace of mind. with a random engine from some junkyard or some guy a craigslist you could end up with the same problem in the near future. especially if you cant compression and leakdown test it.

Or, you can find a local importer to get motors from; or order one off a reputable site from the Internet. I would never buy a motor from someone on Craigslist, or some random junkyard. If I were to put a different motor in one of my Civics today, it would only be a low mileage JDM motor.

I think (and I may be wrong) that only applies if you leave the belts/pumps, etc on the motor when you put in, i.e not replacing any of the belts on the motor prior to putting it in (which I would say is the smart thing to do since everything is so easy to get to, assuming you know what you're doing.)

they arent standing next to you at your house when you put the motor in, so replace all the belts etc you want, keep the original stuff, if the motor doesnt start or doesnt run right or whatever, put the original parts back on, take the motor back, and get a new one and start over again

what do you mean allegedly, you go to the place in person, they all have there info posted everywhere, the warranty and such and its printed on the receipts, so if the motor is bad bring it back, by law they have to give you another

This would be the time to upgrade.

Or just get Hastings or some other decent aftermarket rings, and rent a ball hone. You'll need a new head gasket and oil pan gasket. Timing belt and such should be changed at this time. You can reuse head bolts once if you torque them tighter. It's not recommended, but people do it. I just did on a very budget repair and the head gasket is holding fine.

If you buy another motor, HMotorsOnline is a legit seller according to many. Many people have had great engines and the few who had issues, HMO fixed issues promptly

Hey just a question have you changed your pcv valve. I didn't do that when I did my motor swap, an I was getting alot of smoke an had to fill oil when ever I added gas, but then I called inlinepro an they said change the pcv valve so I did problem FIXED. give it a try only cost me $3.00 instead of a new bottom end. just my $0.02

What is not being factored is the cost of a cherry picker and engine stand to do the swap. I haven't found the two for under $250 used. Alternatively, you can do the ring repair from the bottom and it'd end up being quicker and cheaper to do than a swap. Then you know they are new.
